Frame rate debate rages on with 48 fps projection of 3D Hobbit footage

Image

With his use of Red cameras, 3ality rigs, and high frame rate 3D technology, no one can accuse Peter Jackson of being stuck in the past. Need more evidence of his anti-luddism? He just gave the first projection of footage from his 3D opus "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in its full 48 fps glory at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas. With the public having endured 80 years of 24 fps film-watching, Jackson appealed to viewers to allow their eyes to adjust to the doubled rate during the ten minute screening. But the reaction showed that public acceptance might take a while. One projectionist compared it to made-for-TV fare, and others referenced Mexican soap-operas and TruMotion. The reply to these criticisms by Jackson (and James Cameron) has always been that 3D is better suited to faster frame rates than 2D -- making it more immersive, reducing headaches and improving stereoscopy. We'll have to wait for the film's release this December to find out whether he's right, or if this attempt at high frame speeds will go the way of Showscan.

Hear that? It's the sound of Google Wallet pennies clinking inside a Galaxy Nexus, despite the fact that we have a T-Mo SIM inserted. It previously only worked with AT&T. Although we downloaded the app from Google Play and got it up and running fine, we haven't actually paid for anything yet -- so let us know if you have any successful transactions!

NEW YORKThe Wanted made their "Today" show debut on Tuesday (April 24), the day of their debut U.S. EP release.

The fans' energy was predictably high when the guys stepped outside to the famed Rockefeller Plaza. Before their scheduled performance, the group greeted their devoted legion of female fans, who had made up signs to welcome the guys to the show.

All five fellas happily took the time to pose with fans and sign autographs in the moments leading up to their performance. Then they sang not only their chart-topping track "Glad You Came" but also their new single, "Chasing the Sun."

"We've done two albums, so we're trying to catch people up in America," Wanted member Tom Parker told co-host Ann Curry about the EP, their first official Stateside release. They then launched into "Glad," clad in leather jackets and displaying their boy-band bravado.

After they left the stage, they shared with MTV News that they were thankful to all the people who showed up. "It was average at best," Jay McGuiness joked about the performance, teasing that "Chasing the Sun" was a "hot mess like Lindsay Lohan."

The "Today" show was the first of many media appearances the Wanted will make on Tuesday, leading up to their "MTV First" special airing tonight at 7:53 p.m. on MTV. They will sit down with MTV News' Sway Calloway to debut the "Chasing the Sun" video and chat.

Immediately following the MTV premiere, the fivesome are hanging around for an additional 30-minute live Q&A session with Sway on MTV.com. Fans can get in on the action by submitting video or text questions via MTV.com or @MTVNews on Twitter, using the hashtags #MTVFirst or #AskTheWanted.

The guys are also one of the 32 hopefuls in MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands, which pits some of the greatest boy bands of all time against one another, until fans vote their favorite group to #1. The battle kicked off on Monday at BBB.MTV.com, with the first round ending on Thursday. Fans can weigh in on the matches on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB. The winner of Battle of the Boy Bands will be announced on Monday, May 7, live on "AMTV" on MTV.

The Wanted are taking over the Big Apple! Stick with MTV News for updates and exclusive behind-the-scenes photos all day. We'll tag along with the guys on stops like the "Today" show and the Empire State Building before "MTV First: The Wanted" kicks off at 7:53 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. Be sure to tune in for the premiere of the "Chasing the Sun" video and a 30-minute interview with the band!

Kim Kardashian Sports Kanye West Earrings On NYC Date

'I don't think it's serious. I think it's too soon,' Khloé Kardashian tells Bravo's 'Watch What Happens Live' of Kim and Kanye's romance.

"Meet the Parents," "Ice Cream Date," "Yeezy In Your Ear," those are just some of the songs that Kanye West may be inspired to write after the weekend he and Kim Kardashian shared.

On Saturday afternoon, the new (or maybe not so new) couple was spotted strolling through New York City. Kanye was all smiles as the paparazzi caught them enjoying the spring weather, Kim with an ice cream cone in hand. Later that evening, the pair was spotted in Manhattan's Spice Market, and Kim took Yeezy to dine with the rest of the Kardashian clan. Kim was then photographed yet again wearing 'Ye's initials on her lobes with subtle "K W" earrings.

Kim's sister Khloé appeared on Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live" on Sunday and dished on the lovebirds. "I don't think it's serious. I think it's too soon," Khloé said of her sister and Kanye's relationship.

Kanye and Kim have been friends for a number of years, something that Khloé admires. "Because they're friends for so long, it's so easy," she said of the new power couple. "That's something that I love seeing about Kim, the easiness and how happy she is. It's just more of a great friendship and friendships make the best relationships."

With the next season of "Keeping up With the Kardashians" set to premiere on May 20, everyone is wondering if the multiplatinum rapper/producer will be making an appearance. Not if he doesn't want to, says the reality show star. "No one has to be on camera, it's not like we're driven to slavery," Khloé said. "Everyone has the option, except for us."

Things started to heat up, publicly at least, after Yeezy dropped his single "Way Too Cold" at the top of the month. In the song's lyrics he professes his love for Kim, and the two have been seen gallivanting around NYC ever since.

HTC One S Review: Head-To-Head With The One X And iPhone 4S

Screen shot 2012-04-22 at 2.02.05 PMI've been fiddling around with the HTC One S for a few days now, and I have to say it's stolen a little piece of my heart. The hardware is just about perfect, with a 4.3-inch qHD display and a slender aluminum unibody shell, and software like HTC's Sense 4 overlay and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich only sweeten the deal. But, as per usual, there's plenty to consider out there. The wide world of mobile only grows wider by the second, with hot new phones launching left and right. Just today, Sprint's Galaxy Nexus and the LG Viper landed on store shelves, and lest we forget that the iPhone 4S and HTC's mamma jamma One X are also ready and waiting for new owners. So many options. To help, we've put the One S up against it's greatest competitors, the HTC One X and the iPhone 4S, in a spec showdown. Who will come out on top? Well, my dear readers, that ball is in your court.

In easing Myanmar sanctions, U.S. seeks to boost reforms

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is moving to ease bans on U.S. companies investing in and providing financial services to Myanmar, and will first target those sectors that could support democratic reforms in the country, a senior U.S. official said on Friday.

The official said that final reviews were under way following Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's pledge earlier this month to begin unwinding U.S. business sanctions, with decisions expected in coming weeks.

"It will be a matter of weeks to months to actually implement all that, but we are not looking long term," the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Reuters in an interview.

The United States has repeatedly promised to review sanctions in response to dramatic political reforms in Myanmar that have seen veteran pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi elected to parliament and a raft of other repressive measures lifted. Myanmar, also known as Burma, was run by the military for five decades until a year ago.

But the complex web of U.S. sanctions has proved hard to unravel, leaving some companies fretting they will be left out of a potential economic boom in the country.

"It has taken a lot of our time to figure out how to navigate them and therefore how to use them to send the signals that we want to send," the official said.

Certain sectors of the Southeast Asian country's economy, notably industries such as mining, oil and timber, remain riddled with cronyism, making them less appealing candidates for immediate sanctions relief, the official said.

But he said greater U.S. involvement in other sectors could help Myanmar transform its economy and establish new standards for transparency, accountability and corporate social responsibility.

"We still are concerned about the reversibility and the sustainability of reform. But we also believe it is time that we also relieve some of the restrictions that are getting in the way of our ability to partner on reform," he said, stressing no specific decisions had yet been made.

'LOW-HANGING FRUIT'

The United States has already eased some limits on Myanmar, announcing this week it would permit financial transactions to support humanitarian and development projects - a boon to non-governmental organizations that hope to expand operations there.

The United States has also moved to support normal U.N. Development Program, or UNDP, operations, and is working to set up a local office of the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Government contacts are also expanding as the United States drops visa bans on senior Myanmar leaders. The country's health minister was in Washington last week, and its foreign minister is due in May.

The United States is also expected soon to return a full ambassador to Myanmar after an absence of two decades.

But U.S. businesses are watching closely for steps to ease sanctions on investment, which have helped keep the country isolated and pushed it deeper into the economic embrace of its powerful neighbor China.

The U.S. official said that banking services, the agricultural sector and telecommunications were all areas where U.S. companies could make contributions to Myanmar's economic reforms and the welfare of its people.

"These are low-hanging fruit," said Suzanne DiMaggio, vice president for policy at the Asia Society, adding that a step-by-step strategy could help preserve U.S. leverage but also ran the risk of allowing other countries to steal the march on one of Asia's most promising, yet undeveloped economies.

"It is really going to be hard for the United States to compete with the Chinese in the immediate future, especially if it takes a sector-by-sector approach," DiMaggio said.

'FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD LOOK'

The U.S. official said Washington remained leery of Myanmar's extractive industries, saying they were "riddled with cronyism," deeply involved with corrupt elements of the military and focused in restive areas where ethnic minority groups say they have long been oppressed.

"That sector probably shines brightest in terms of having to give it a first, second and third look," the official said.

He also said the United States had broader concerns over the commitment of military leaders to reform, and their ties to North Korea.

U.S. officials and economic analysts have cautioned that, despite its progress, Myanmar will likely remain a challenging business environment. Corruption, shaky investment protections and infrastructure problems promise to slow international investment and trade even as sanctions fall away.

But China already has extensive economic interests in Myanmar, Australia has eased sanctions, and the European Union is expected to suspend its economic sanctions next week, opening the country to more competition.

Washington hopes that as it opens its own door to economic ties, U.S. companies will benefit from the halo effect of strong U.S. support for the reform process and Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi herself.

"I think our companies will have an equal, level playing field when they go in," the official said. "They want to buy American. They want to engage with America."

Google's ex-CEO gets $101M pay package in new job

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Shifting from Google's CEO to executive chairman proved to be lucrative career move for Eric Schmidt.

Google Inc. awarded Schmidt a compensation package valued at $101 million last year, according to a Friday regulatory filing. The amount is 322 times higher than the $313,219 package that Schmidt received in 2010 during his final full year as the Internet search leader's CEO.

Schmidt, 56, ended a decade-long stint as Google's CEO last April and turned over the job to Google co-founder Larry Page.

Shortly before the change in command, Google gave Schmidt stock and stock options valued at nearly $94 million, according to the company's proxy statement. Google had designed the stock and stock option package to be worth $100 million, but the compensation formula spelled out by securities regulators arrived at a slightly different calculation.

To top it off, Google raised Schmidt's salary from $1 annually as CEO to $1.25 million as executive chairman. His 2011 salary ended up being $937,500 because he spent the first three months of the year in the lower-paying job as CEO.

The rest of Schmidt's 2011 compensation consisted of a $6 million bonus and perks worth nearly $264,000. Schmidt deposited half of his bonus last year in a company plan that can defer payment for up to five years.

Page's compensation package totaled $1 last year, consisting solely of a nominal salary. He has maintained a $1 salary since 2005, although in some years he has accepted the Google's companywide holiday bonus. That's what happened in 2010 when Page's pay package totaled $1,723.

Weekly paychecks, annual bonuses and stock options haven't been essential to Schmidt or Page since Google's initial public offering of stock in August 2004. That IPO turned them, along with Google co-founder Sergey Brin, into multibillionaires who are perennials on Forbes' list of the world's richest people.

Forbes' latest rankings estimate Page, 39, and Brin, 38, are each worth nearly $19 billion. The magazine pegs Schmidt's wealth at nearly $7 billion.

Like Page, Brin limited his pay package last year to $1.

Since Google's IPO, Schmidt's total compensation package as CEO had never exceeded $560,000, based on an analysis of Google's past regulatory filings. From 2004 through 2010, Schmidt's combined compensation totaled $2.2 million.

In his new job as executive chairman, Schmidt serves as a company ambassador who meets with government regulators, explores potential acquisitions and makes public appearances.

In its proxy statement, Google described Schmidt's big stock and stock option package as a way to recognize his accomplishments as CEO. When Schmidt took in job in 2002, Google had annual revenue of $86 million and fewer than 300 employees. In Schmidt's final full year as CEO, Google had grown to a company with $29 billion in revenue and more than 24,000 employees.

Even after last year's big windfall, Schmidt is still raising cash. In February, he filed plans to sell up to 2.4 million shares of stock currently worth about $1.4 billion.

Page and Brin are in the process of selling 5 million Google shares apiece under a program scheduled to be completed in 2015.

Page, Brin and Schmidt have been Google's controlling shareholders since the IPO, thanks to a special class of stock that gives them 10 times the voting power of other shareholders. To ensure they remain in power as Google doles out more stock to pay employees and finance acquisitions, Brin and Page are pursuing a 2-for-1 stock split that will create new class of shares with zero voting power.

The unusual stock split announced last week has been derided by corporate governance experts who oppose disenfranchising other shareholders.

But the proposal is almost certain to be approved at Google's June 21 annual meeting because Page, Brin and Schmidt support it.

Friday's regulatory filing disclosed that the idea for the stock split was first broached in June 2010. Google's board then formed a special committee to analyze the pros and cons. After some haggling with Brin and Page over the limits on their control, the board reached a compromise earlier this month.

Veterans Affairs department plans to add about 1900 mental health ...

?As the tide of war recedes, we have the opportunity, and the responsibility, to anticipate the needs of returning veterans,? VA Secretary Eric Shinseki said in a statement. ?History shows that the costs of war will continue to grow for a decade or more after the operational missions in Iraq and Afghanistan have ended. As more veterans return home, we must ensure that all veterans have access to quality mental health care.?

The new hires follow a months-long VA review that determined shortages in mental health staff nationwide, leading veterans in some areas to wait longer than they should for treatment, VA Under Secretary for Health Robert Petzel said in an interview. Recruitment is expected to begin soon, and the VA plans to attract specialists from the military, the private sector and fresh out of school, Petzel said.

?We feel as if we need to add additional personnel,? he said.

The move was cheered by Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, which also called on the VA to reduce its claims backlog and urged President Barack Obama to issue a national call for service for mental health professionals.

Since 2007, the VA has experienced a 35 percent increase in the number of veterans receiving mental health services. The department says it?s made strides in part by developing a more extensive suicide prevention program and by increasing the number of counseling centers.

The mental well-being of U.S. veterans has been a critical area of concern in recent years, especially amid reports showing high suicide rates and long wait times for those seeking treatment. A VA survey released last fall, for instance, reported that nearly 40 percent of the 272 mental health providers surveyed said they could not schedule a new patient for an appointment in their own clinic within the VA-mandated window of 14 days, and 70 percent said they lacked adequate space and staff.

Petzel said those problems were largely a reflection by vacancies and a staff shortage, problems the new hires are intended to address.

Rep. Jeff Miller, a Florida Republican and chairman of the House Veterans? Affairs Committee, said the announcement was a good start, but that the VA also needs to strengthen training of employees who encounter veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

?Right now, too many veterans fall through the cracks. We can avert tragedy with the proper outreach and care,? Miller said in a statement.

Sen. Patty Murray, who chairs the Senate Veterans? Affairs Committee, has scheduled a hearing on the topic for next week. She noted that the VA?s announcement comes days before the release of an inspector general?s report on the subject, but Petzel said the review had been underway for months and was not timed to the report. Murray said the new hires were ?desperately needed? at a time when ?staff vacancies, scheduling delays and red tape? are leaving veterans without the help they need.

Stuck On A Home Improvement Job? Use These Tips To Get It Done ...

Every spring, check your roof for any signs of damage. Here is one sign of damage to look for: shingles that are no longer flat, having taken on a curl due to winter?s stresses. You will want to replace these damaged shingles. By doing this yearly maintenance of your roof, you can usually circumvent major and expensive repairs in the future.

Paint is the foundation of any room and sets the tone ? start there before planning for other elements. Painting the walls and ceiling of a room can be done far easier if you do it before having new flooring installed. Paint drips and spatters are inevitable even if you use drop cloths and tarps.

Apply an asphalt search to keep your driveway from crumbling and cracking. Sun and rain can damage the driveway. Water that seeps into cracks and freezes, expands and increases the size of the crack. Applying a sealant will lessen the effects that weather and other elements will have on your driveway, which naturally extends its useful life.

Redoing the caulk on your windows is a project that will save you from potential damage to your home, as well as money on utilities. By doing this, you will be sure to prevent moisture and drafts from getting into your house. This will end up saving you a lot on your heating bill, as well as help prevent mold growth. If there are cracks in the existing caulk, use a chisel to remove it, and then apply the new caulk.

Would you like a new dresser? You can make it look brand new by refinishing it. You can save a lot of money by refinishing the furniture you already have. Old furniture can be stained a variety of colors.

Always make sure to cover surfaces to protect them, whether you are painting or demolishing walls or cabinets. Protecting these surfaces means protecting your wallet from further expenditures. You should also cover walls if debris is going to be flying around when you whack out a cabinet. All fixtures should also be covered if you are painting.

Look for ideas for home improvement projects now. If you have a lot of ideas in mind, the easier it will be when a decision has to be made. Knowing what you want ahead of time will make your project less stressful, and you will be happier with the outcome.

Gutters are often the culprit in drainage problems, especially if you have had a particularly rainy season. Clogged gutters causing rainwater to leak down the side of a house is actually one of the main causes of leaks in the basement. Make a habit of cleaning your gutters to avoid this problem.

Keep your young children safe by padding the corners of your furniture. You can get protectors for the corners of your furniture from a store or just use tape made of foam. As well, make sure you tape wires to the floor or wall so young children do not play with them and accidentally strangle themselves.

Homeowners should use their best judgement when dealing with a contractor. Sometimes getting a second opinion is the best option. Many contractors will try to take advantage of home owners. Be sure to verify all the potential problems that a contractor mentions a home having.

Sort your tools by purpose or project, not by type. If you have a plumbing project, keep all tools related to plumbing in a separate box. Use another for electrical jobs that contains switches, voltmeters, zip ties, fuses, etc. By doing this, you will be able to locate specific tools whenever you need them.

With any luck, these tips can help you see what benefits home improvement can provide. With some effort and patience, and the right tools, you can make your home truly your own. Make home improvement a hobby and save your money while having fun.

Tackling home improvement projects may be a frustrating and drawn-out procedure; but when completed proper it can entirely change the look and feel of your property. Should you don?t have time to do the residence remodeling your self, I suggest hiring a remodeling contractor situated within the Los Angeles region to come and care for it for you personally. If you want the job carried out right and carried out swiftly, withought finding overcharged, you need to hire the pros at Xtreme Remodeling! They do kitchen remodeling in Chicago, together with all other sorts of home improvement projects, and they take pride in providing exceptional worth to their clientele. Give them a contact today and let them turn your dream property into a reality!

MGM titles finally arrive on YouTube and Google Play in North America

Android Central

Notably missing from the Google Play and YouTube repertoire of content, has long been iconic studio MGM. But now, they're missing no more. MGM has become the fifth major studio to partner with Google, and over 600 titles will be making their way into the catalog. The only catch thus far -- in typical Google fashion it will only be available in the US and Canada for the time being.

More titles will be added over the coming weeks. But, for now if you've been hankering for some Robocop or Terminator action on your Android device, hanker no longer.
