An Australian coroner has called for an inquest into the death of a former Dunedin woman after a private investigation by her family suggested she may not have committed suicide as first thought.

Nadine Haag, 33, was found dead in her Sydney apartment on December 3, 2009. She had deep wounds on her wrists and a suicide note tucked in her hand. Pills and a razor were also found nearby.

The police concluded Haag had killed herself, and so did not carry out any forensic work or take finger prints at the time. But Haag's family did not accept the ruling, prompting her brother Marcel and three sisters, Chantal, Tasia and Cherie to conduct their own investigation with the help of former Victorian homicide Inspector Lucio Rovis.

The family's story featured in an October episode of the Australian current affairs show Sunday Night, which confirmed a New South Wales coroner had called for an inquest into Nadine's death.

The inquest would include the evidence gathered by her family, which included a second message reading "he did it", found at the scene of Haag's death.

According to the show, the "vivacious" dance instructor had been in an alleged violent relationship, and at the time of her death was locked in a bitter dispute with her former partner. According to Sunday Night, her former partner has vehemently denied any involvement in her death.

It was revealed on the show that in 2009, she had sought two protection orders against Nestore Guizzon, but was denied by police both times.

On the day of her death, Haag had an appointment with her lawyer and had also made plans to travel back to Queensland with her young daughter to visit their family. She was found dead in the shower the next day.

PRIVATE INVESTIGATION

Police took no DNA, fingerprints or forensic evidence from the scene because they were treating it as a suicide.

Since 2010 however, Haag's siblings have been working to find out what really happened to their sister.

Sunday Night revealed how they recreated the crime scene and discovered two hidden messages saying "he did it", hidden underneath the original suicide note, and the same message scratched on a wall tile in Haag's bathroom, which, disturbingly, police missed.

The second message was found only months ago by new tenants in Haag's old apartment.

Toxicology reports commissioned by Haag's siblings found the amount of pills in her system was less than the therapeutic amount, Sunday Night reported. The siblings also found her wrist wounds were much deeper than what could have been made by the razor.

At the time of her death, Haag's family questioned the amount of blood found near her, was relatively small when her artery was supposed to have been cut, Sunday Night said.

A brown dress Haag was wearing on the day she died was unaccounted for, as were two knives from a set of six.

On the show, her family said they were "adamant", Haag did not commit suicide. They believed the messages left by Haag in her dying moments proved that. But according to Sunday Night, NSW police interpreted the messages to mean Guizzon drove her to commit suicide.

Teens held over destruction at Jewish cemeteries

Three teenagers have been arrested for allegedly destroying nearly 100 gravestones at Jewish cemeteries, police in Connecticut said. More than $20,000 worth of damage was caused during the attack.

Hartford Police, which started to investigate this case in mid-October, recently got a tip that three teens that live in the neighborhood were responsible and the arrests were made over the weekend.

Dozens of headstones are still toppled over at the Tower Avenue Jewish Cemeteries.

At first police investigated the case as a hate crime, but after talking to the teens, they said this was no longer the case.

Leonard Holtz, with Congregation Ados Israel, said the vandalism "basically attacked the defenseless and the emotions of those survivors."

"(The arrests) don't lessen the pain for people who have had their monuments desecrated," he added.

Holtz said visitors were still uneasy.??It has taken away the feeling that you can go here with peace of mind,? he said.

Hartford Police said that the suspects may have destroyed the gravestones while they were using it as a shortcut to a nearby park.

?It's a crime that inflicts pain and suffering on other families,? Holtz said.

He said he wanted those responsible to be held accountable, and to understand the damage wasn?t just aesthetic.

?A cemetery should be a sacred place, holy ground, this should never happen,? Holtz added.

When Type A Personalities Retire: It Isn't Pretty

Retirement can be rough for hard chargers, but there are ways to make the transition smoother

So you?re a Type A personality: hard-charging, status-driven and impatient. How do you think that?ll work out for you in retirement?

Quite possibly not so great, according to Donald Asher, a Gerlach, Nev., career consultant who has been studying Type A retirees. ?Type As don?t stop being Type As in retirement,? Asher says.

Asher, who speaks on this subject around the country, told me that a Type A personality isn?t very well suited to the retirement life.

?You Can Only Play So Much Golf?

?One Type A guy I met on a golf course said to me: ?When I was about to retire, I was looking forward to playing a lot of golf. But now that I?m retired, I found you can only play so much golf,?? Asher says.

Before they retire, Type As are often leaders at work, barking orders and getting things done when they want, the way they want. (Cardiologist Meyer Friedman, who coined the term ?Type A personality,? said the behavior is expressed partly through ?free-floating hostility,? but let?s not even go there.)

To paraphrase the famous New Yorker cartoon about the dog using the Internet, in retirement nobody knows you were a chief executive or a heart surgeon. Out of uniform, a Type A retiree looks just like all the other retirees and is typically viewed no differently by the people he or she encounters. You don?t get special treatment (senior discounts aside). You're not surrounded by toadies who genuflect based on your title, because you no longer have a title. And that can come as a shock.

What?s more, life is unstructured when you?re a retiree. You don?t have meetings lined up for you at specified times; it?s up to you to plot your day, your week, your month -- your life. It can be exasperating for a Type A.

Rob Pascale found all this out when he retired at 51 from his job running a market research firm in Charlotte, N.C. The lead author of The Retirement Maze, a terrific book I wrote about on Next Avenue, Pascale told me that he turned glum just a few months after retiring. ?I had lower self-esteem than when I was working," he says. "I also had a lack of structure and purpose in my life.?

Retired for Five Months

The New York Times recently wrote about the similar experience of Alan Siegel, 74, who had been chairman of the brand-and-corporate-identity consultant Siegel & Gale in New York City. A Type A if ever there was one, Siegel retired last May, and about five months later decided he couldn?t hack it. He just launched Siegelvision, a firm that?s competing with the one he had founded and left.

When asked why retirement didn?t take, Siegel said: ?I can?t do it. I love the interaction with different kinds of people. I like to shake things up, make a difference.?

The adjustment isn't tough only for Type As. Life can become brutal for their spouses, who wind up getting ordered around, if only due to proximity.

?One woman told me that her husband started demanding she fold the towels differently,? Asher says. ?She said to him, ?You never cared about the way I folded towels for 50 years. This isn?t going to work.??

Retirement Advice for Type As

So what should a Type A do when retirement beckons?

Start by building up a new social network of other retirees, Asher suggests. ?Social interaction is often the biggest thing that?s missing in the lives of Type As. The four walls of a home aren?t enough,? he says. ?A social network lets you scratch that itch.?

Next, find a new form of prestige to replace the status your job provided. ?Maybe it?s following the Rolling Stones around the world or driving a $365,000 RV,? Asher says.

If you?re considering an encore career to help others, look for the type of position that plays to your personality. That generally means a paid or volunteer job as a supervisor with authority.

Finally, Asher says -- and this may sound a little strange -- come up with something that will add pressure and stress to your life. ?That?s not compatible with the traditional idea of retirement,? he notes. ?I had a buddy who is doing the Ironman Triathlon at 60. He?s creating his own pressure.?

For a Type A, pressure and stress just seem to make life worth living.

The Nile, Egypt's lifeline in the desert, comes under threat

CAIRO ? Overwhelmed by cascading economic and political problems since the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, this nation teeters from within even as it biggest threat may lie hundreds of miles away in the African highlands. Buried in the headlines is the future of the Nile River ? and thus the fate of Egypt itself.

Mubarak long neglected the security danger posed by other nations' claims to the timeless pulse that provides 95% of this desert country's water, without which its delta farmlands would wither and its economy die. As poor African capitals increasingly challenge Cairo, however, the struggle has become one of the most pressing foreign policy tests for Egypt's new president, Mohamed Morsi.

African countries at the river's source, notably Ethiopia, no longer feel bound by colonial-era agreements on water rights and are moving to siphon away larger shares of water for electricity, irrigation and business to meet demands of burgeoning populations.

It is a skirmish involving diplomats, engineers and veiled threats of war over geography's blessings and slights and how nations in a new century will divvy up a river on whose banks civilizations have risen and tumbled.

"All of Egyptian life is based on the Nile. Without it there is nothing," said Moujahed Achouri, the representative for the United Nations' Food and Agricultural Organization in Egypt.

Morsi's acknowledgment of the water crisis and his desire to reach a compromise to protect his country's strategic and historical claim is evident: The Islamist leader has visited key Nile countries twice since his inauguration in June, and his prime minister, Hesham Kandil, is a former water and irrigation minister with connections to officials in African governments. An Egyptian delegation recently toured the region, listening to how Cairo might help build hospitals and schools in villages and jungles.

An advisor to the president quoted in Al Ahram Weekly said this of Morsi: "The man was shocked when he received a review about the state of ties we have with Nile basin countries. The previous regime should be tried for overlooking such a strategic interest."

For decades, Egypt had concentrated on problems closer to home, including keeping the Arab-Israeli peace and tending to wars from Lebanon to Iraq. Mubarak, who survived a 1995 assassination attempt by Islamic extremists in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, had paid little attention to East Africa. But his regime was adamant ? at one point hinting at military action ? in preserving the existing Nile treaties.

That echoed a warning from his predecessor, President Anwar Sadat, in 1979: "The only matter that could take Egypt to war again is water."

In a 1929 treaty and through other pacts, Egypt and its southern neighbor, Sudan, were granted the bulk of the Nile's flow. The logic ? filtered through decades of politics and power struggles ? was that Egypt could not survive without the river. Nile basin countries, including Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, have seasonal rains and other water sources.

But economic pressure and increasing demand for energy and development have turned African countries' attention to the Nile. Since 2010, Ethiopia, which now gets only 3% of its water from the Nile, and five other upstream countries have indicated they would divert more water and no longer honor Egypt's veto power over building projects on the river.

The biggest challenge to Cairo is the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Experts estimate that the hydropower project, which is under construction and is expected to cost at least $4.8 billion, could reduce the river's flow to Egypt by as much as 25% during the three years it would take to fill the reservoir behind the dam. The project faces a number of potential setbacks and lost its biggest proponent when Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi died in August.

Ethiopia has sought to reassure Cairo that Egypt's annual share of 55.5 billion cubic meters of Nile water ? about two-thirds of the river's flow ? will not be disrupted and that the new dam may provide low-cost electricity to its neighbors. But the Egyptians are suspicious.

"Egypt has entered a stage where its resources are depleting and population is rapidly increasing," said Hani Raslan, an expert on the Nile basin for Al Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies in Cairo. "If the dam is complete ? this will mean Ethiopia will turn into an enemy for Egypt because it will essentially threaten the country's safety, development and livelihood of its people."

He added, "Egypt would legally have the right to defend itself by going to war."

The struggle over the river highlights decades of strained relations. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni was quoted as saying before Morsi's visit in October: "Despite the Nile River supporting livelihoods of millions of Egyptians from the ancient times to date, none of the country's presidents has ever visited Uganda to see the source of this lifeline."

Egypt and the other Nile nations are seeking to calm the rhetoric.

Officials say a resolution may include Cairo entering into long-term economic and energy resource agreements with neighboring capitals. The Egyptian delegation that recently toured the region included doctors and representatives of food banks, hospitals and charities.

Egypt, however, faces deep economic problems and is trying to attract foreign investment, which dropped sharply during last year's uprising and ensuing political unrest.

"Morsi is trying to send signals to the African world that Egypt is opening up now, that he wants to improve relations and increase cooperation," Raslan said. Morsi's visits to Africa "are all just gestures."

"No real agreements have been reached yet," he said. "More needs to be done. Egypt wants and needs to reach its influence in the region."

The essence of the Nile conflict is poor nations ? Egypt and Ethiopia ? needing the river for similar reasons. Ethiopia, which has experienced strong economic growth in recent years, wants to boost electricity output while spurring agriculture and development. Those needs also resonate to the north, but Egypt, which has no other water source, faces more dire prospects.

The crisis is certain to force Egypt, where regulations are tangled in bureaucracy and often ignored, to improve water conservation among the nearly 30% of its population that depends on farming for its livelihood. Much of the Nile Delta is made up of small family farms that for centuries have grown wheat, corn and rice with little environmental concern. This attitude and a growing population, which may jump from 82 million to 150 million by 2050, have put further strains on the river.

"Water policies in Egypt have to be long-range," said Achouri, the U.N. official. "If you want farmers to stop using too much water for irrigation, alternatives and other incentives should be made available to them. Farmers right now cannot make a living without the Nile."

A possible solution is rotating away from water-intensive crops, such as rice, and shifting to increased wheat production. Egypt, where the word "bread" also means "life," is the world's No. 1 importer of wheat. Agricultural experts say reducing rice production while increasing wheat yields would conserve water and meet the country's food needs.

Such a scenario may be forced upon farmers if the Nile's flow is curtailed and irrigation canals become parched. Egypt's water and irrigation minister, Mohamed Bahaa El Din Saad, said recently that overpopulation, farming and other water uses have left the country with a "water deficit" of billions of gallons.

"More than 90% of the water for Egypt's 90 million people is coming in from the Nile," Achouri said. "The only way out is for more efficient use."

Factbox: Ecuador and its president Rafael Correa

(Reuters) - Ecuador's leftist President Rafael Correa on Saturday said he will run for re-election in February 2013.

Here are some key facts about Correa and Ecuador:

Correa was born in 1963 to a lower middle-class family in the port city of Guayaquil. He earned an economics degree from the local university before winning scholarships in Belgium and the United States, where he received his doctorate in 2001.

He took office in 2007 promising a "Citizens' Revolution" to boost state revenue from Ecuador's natural resources and redistribute wealth among the poor.

Correa defaulted on billions of dollars of foreign debt in 2008, a move that alienated foreign investors, but was applauded by locals. He backed the re-writing of Ecuador's constitution to tilt the balance of power towards the executive, and won re-election in 2009.

After the default, Correa strengthened financial ties with China, and debt commitments to the Asian country total about $7.3 billion, including loans, advance payments for oil sales and energy project financing.

A former economy minister, Correa has boosted spending on infrastructure and social welfare projects, which has made him popular among the poor in shanty towns and rural areas.

High oil prices and increased tax revenues have allowed Correa to continue spending heavily in the months leading to the election, but he has acknowledged that the country is set to suffer badly if crude prices fall.

The father of three with a Belgian wife comes across as a feisty leader who never shies away from a fight. He has taken on international bondholders, oil companies, local bankers, the Catholic Church and private media companies.

His ongoing spat with local media has made Correa the target of freedom of expression groups. He says local media are bent on presenting a bleak view of his government to woo voters to the opposition. He has sued several journalists and newspaper owners for libel, but pardoned them after winning the cases.

Some media freedom advocates say he wants to stamp out criticism of his policies in the media.

Political foes denounce his style as "caudillismo," a term used in Latin America to describe governments led by strongmen who stamp out opposition to their rule. Though the opposition is divided, it has a slim majority in Congress. This has allowed it to block or delay legislation backed by Correa.

Correa's relationship with Washington has been stormy. He expelled the U.S. ambassador in 2011 after U.S. diplomatic cables disclosed by WikiLeaks alleged that his government turned a blind eye on police corruption. In 2007, he refused to extend a lease letting the U.S. military use the Manta airbase for counter-narcotics flights, and in 2009 he expelled two U.S. Embassy officials in another case involving the police.

He believes U.S. intelligence services are conspiring with his political rivals to undermine his rule. In an interview with Julian Assange earlier this year, he told the Wikileaks' founder that they were both victims of persecution. He granted Assange political asylum on fears that the United States might want to extradite him, and the former computer hacker has been holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in London since June.

Correa has had a tumultuous relationship with foreign oil investors. In 2011, he asked oil companies to sign less profitable service contracts or leave the country. Since then, foreign oil companies have not invested in exploration. Whereas oil output in neighboring Colombia is booming thanks to foreign investment, Ecuador has been producing around 500,000 barrels a day for the past five years.

In the aftermath of a debt default, Ecuador adopted the U.S. dollar as its currency in 2000. At the time, the country was gripped by a financial crisis that pushed poverty levels up to about 70 percent.

Ecuador is a volcanic country of poor Andean villages, remote Amazon tribes, unspoiled beaches, huge banana plantations and bustling ports. The unique wildlife in its Galapagos Islands inspired Darwin's theory of evolution.

Ecuador takes its name from the equator it straddles and has a population of 14.5 million people. A little larger in area than Britain, Ecuador is the smallest OPEC member and the world's top banana exporter and is also a big exporter of coffee, shrimp and cocoa.

Tally of November's Vulnerabilities and a Zero-Day ...

It?s not yet the second Tuesday of the month ? but already there are a good number of important updates that you should apply. (And one significant zero-day of which you should be aware.)

First up: Flash! Adobe released an important update on November 6th (details here) that corrects seven vulnerabilities.

11.5.502.110 is the latest version depending on the browser. Do remember you don?t need to have more plug-ins installed than you actually use. For example, Chrome includes its own version of Flash.

And speaking of Chrome, Google also released a security update on the 6th (details). That?s a rather easy update, just check About (chrome://chrome/) to see that you?re running version 23.0.1271.64.

Apple released updates for the Windows version of QuickTime on November 7th (details). QuickTime 7.7.3 includes 9 updates for vulnerabilities which appear to be exploitable in drive-by attacks. QuickTime is no longer required by iTunes. If you don?t remember the last time it was used, ask yourself, do you really need to have QuickTime installed? (It?s a very popular target.)

Speaking of popular targets?

Java! Be sure your Java Runtime client is up to date. (Check your version here.) Our single biggest detection based on upstream data is: Exploit:Java/Majava.A. Java Runtime is the number one target bar none.

And the second most common detection based on our upstream data is: Exploit:W32/CVE-2010-0188.B. An exploit for Adobe Reader, which you can see from the CVE number, dates back to 2010. So make sure you?re running the latest version of Adobe Reader.

But even then, be aware there?s an Adobe Reader zero-day vulnerability being reported by Group-IB.

The vulnerability is significant because it is able to exploit current, and up to date, versions of Adobe Reader. And is able to break out of Reader?s sandbox to exploit the host computer.

According to Group-IB, some high end versions of the Blackhole Exploit Kit are being sold. So the exploit isn?t widely in use? yet. Consider mitigating your use of Reader if you have it installed.
