Novartis drug Afinitor wins EU nod to treat breast cancer

ZURICH | Mon Jul 30, 2012 1:32am EDT

ZURICH (Reuters) - Novartis said on Monday European regulators approved Afinitor to treat women with a certain type of breast cancer, following a panel backing in June.

The drug is the first in a class known as mTOR inhibitors to be approved for post-menopausal women with advanced hormone-receptor positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. American health regulators also backed the drug as a breast cancer treatment[ID:nL2E8IKD8B]

Afinitor, also known as everolimus, is designed to be given in combination with another drug, Aromasin, to treat women whose cancer has recurred or progressed after treatment with two other therapies. Aromasin is made by Pfizer Inc.

Novartis's drug - expected to become a major seller for the Swiss drugmaker - is already approved to treat patients with four other types of cancer, including kidney and a rare type of pancreatic cancer.

Romney creates fresh divisions on Israel tour with 'racist' remarks

Being friends with Israel is one thing, delegating the decision to go to war is something else

Romney pledged that, as president, he?d agree to pretty much any action Israel decided to adopt towards Iran, military or otherwise, while suggesting it was not Washington?s place to take the lead in seeking peace.

Being friends with Israel is one thing, but delegating the decision on whether to go to war is something else. Most European countries stopped making that sort of promise after stumbling into the First World War based on mutual aggression agreements.

His remarks on Russia have similarly elicited questions. Assessing America?s international challenges, Mr. Romney declared Russia is ?without question our number one geopolitical foe.? The remark seemed to ignore China?s overwhelming growth in influence and stature, and the ongoing crises of the Middle East, not least Iran?s nuclear ambitions. Though, having ceded decision-making authority on that front to Israel, perhaps Mr. Romney felt the file was closed.

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has been accused of undermining the Middle East peace process and making ?racist? statements during his trip to Israel, where he referred to Jerusalem as the country?s capital and told wealthy Jewish donors that their culture is part of the reason Israelis are more economically successful than nearby Palestinians.

?As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000 dollars, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality,? Romney told about 40 donors who breakfasted at the luxurious King David Hotel in Jerusalem Monday.

?And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things,? Romney said, citing an innovative business climate, the Jewish history of thriving in difficult circumstances and the ?hand of providence.?

Within days of being publicly criticized by the British prime minister for his statements about the Olympics, Romney?s comments once again put him at the centre of an international dustup.

?It is a racist statement and this man doesn?t realize that the Palestinian economy cannot reach its potential because there is an Israeli occupation,? Saeb Erekat, a senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, told The Associated Press.

?It seems to me this man (Romney) lacks information, knowledge, vision and understanding of this region and its people,? Erekat added. ?He also lacks knowledge about the Israelis themselves. I have not heard any Israeli official speak about cultural superiority.?

The breakfast with top donors, mostly Jewish Americans living in Israel, included billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and hedge fund manager Paul Singer ? concluded Romney?s visit to Israel, the second leg of a three-nation overseas tour designed to bolster the his foreign policy credentials.

Sheldon Adelson (R), Chairman of Las Vegas Sands Corp, and his wife Miriam are pictured after attending U.S. Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney's foreign policy remarks at Mishkenot Sha'ananim in Jerusalem, July 29, 2012.

On Sunday, Romney, presenting himself as Israel?s best friend in the November 6 presidential election, said on Sunday that ?any and all measures? must be used to keep Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

A top aide said Romney would support an Israeli military strike if all options had been exhausted, but the candidate himself balked at repeating that position.

In a foreign policy speech in Jerusalem, Romney voiced strong support for the alliance between the United States and Israel and seemed to suggest that President Barack Obama had let the relationship flounder.

?We cannot stand silent as those who seek to undermine Israel voice their criticisms. And we certainly should not join in that criticism. Diplomatic distance in public between our nations emboldens Israel?s adversaries,? said Romney, the walls of the Old City lining the hilltop behind him.

Johnson attended a breakfast fundraiser for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in Jerusalem Monday.

The former Massachusetts governor was in Jerusalem on the second leg of a trip to strengthen his foreign policy credentials in his race to unseat Obama.

?We should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course, and it is our fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded. We recognize Israel?s right to defend itself, and that it is right for America to stand with you,? he said.

Though he adopted an aggressive tone, Romney did not go as far as his senior foreign policy advisor, Dan Senor, who said earlier: ?If Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing that capability, the governor would respect that decision.?

The aide?s comments put Romney at odds with Obama?s efforts to press Israel to avoid any pre-emptive strike before tough Western economic sanctions against Iran run their course.

Romney, however, refused to repeat them when asked by CBS? ?Face the Nation.?

?Well I think because I?m on foreign soil I don?t want to be creating new foreign policy for my country or in any way to distance myself in the foreign policy of our nation. But we respect the right of a nation to defend itself,? Romney said.

The failure of talks between Iran and six world powers to secure a breakthrough in curbing what the West fears is a drive to develop nuclear weapons has raised international concern that Israel may opt for a military strike.

?STRONG MILITARY THREAT?

The presidential hopeful was greeted warmly earlier by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, an old friend of his, who has at times had a strained relationship with Obama.

Netanyahu issued his customary call for stronger measures behind the sanctions to prevent Iran from developing an atomic bomb, which Israel says would be a threat to its existence. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

?We have to be honest that sanctions have not set back the Tehran program one iota and that a strong military threat coupled with sanctions are needed to have a chance to change the situation,? Netanyahu said.

Israel, widely assumed to be the Middle East?s only nuclear-armed state, has warned it is only a matter of time before Iran?s nuclear program achieves a ?zone of immunity? in which uranium enrichment facilities buried deep underground will be invulnerable to bombing.

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney visits the Western Wall on July 29, 2012 in Jerusalem's old city, Israel. Mitt Romney visits Israel as part of a three-nation foreign tour which also includes visits to Poland and Great Britain.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, arriving in Tunisia at the start of a week-long trip to the Middle East and North Africa, defended U.S.-Israeli defense cooperation under Obama.

?I?m not going to comment on what political candidates say or don?t say,? Panetta said.

?I?m proud of the defense partnership that we?ve built over the past several years. The U.S.-Israel defense relationship, I believe, is stronger today than it has been in the past,? the Pentagon chief told reporters traveling with him.

Though Washington has been pressing Israel not to launch a solo strike on Iran, Obama has not ruled out military action if diplomacy fails to curb Iran?s nuclear drive.

Panetta said his view is that the Israelis ?have not made any decisions with regards to Iran and that they continue to support the international effort to bring pressure against Iran.?

In an effort that appeared timed to upstage Romney?s visit to Israel, Obama signed a measure on Friday to strengthen U.S.-Israeli military ties.

Romney?s overseas tour got off to a rocky start, when he angered the British by questioning whether London was ready for the Olympics, a statement he was forced to clarify after a rebuke from Prime Minister David Cameron.

U.S. Republican party presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks at an event in Jerusalem on July 29, 2012.

His visit to Israel gives him the opportunity to appeal to Jewish voters and pro-Israel evangelical voters and contrast himself with Obama.

Romney has sharply criticized Obama?s handling of Iran as not being tough enough.

After talks with Israeli leaders, Romney met Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. He then visited the Western Wall, Judaism?s most revered site.

Wearing a black Jewish skullcap and surrounded by a determined throng of security personnel who cleared a path for him, Romney carefully navigated his way through hundreds of worshippers, some of whom shouted cries of support.

British youth seek farmland, as beef prices rise

Rising commodity prices are boosting the British farming industry, attracting young farmers to enter the profession.

By Mian Ridge,?Correspondent / July 28, 2012

British farmers tend not to be known for their cheeriness. But at the Melton Mowbray cattle market in England?s undulating green Midlands area, where cows, sheep, and chickens are traded, even the most taciturn farmers admit that their business is a good one to be in these days.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

?Things are better, that?s for sure,? said one white-haired farmer dressed in a battered wax jacket, as he watched a herd of glossy brown cattle stomping around an auction hall.?

Cows typically fetch twice the price they did in 2006, when Stuart Hampson, then president of the Royal Agricultural Society of England, spoke of a ?deep-seated crisis? in British farming.?His words followed years of trouble: from a foot-and-mouth crisis to supermarkets? stranglehold over producers.

A surge in commodity prices, especially wheat, hitting $314 a ton last year compared to $125 three years earlier, is underlying their change of fortune and attracting young people to the profession. But booming land prices are making it difficult for them to enter the fray. ?

?There?s much more optimism in farming generally,? says Richard King, a farming consultant at the Anderson Centre in Melton Mowbray, Britain. ?There?s a feeling that rising commodity prices are a symptom of improved prospects for farmers, with a rising population and tighter supply.?

The demand is driven by emerging markets like China, where people are increasingly putting grain-fed meat on their plates instead of rice. Items traditionally popular in the West, including bread, are expected to become popular in other parts of the world as well.?

The United Nations food agency estimates that the world will need to up its cereals production by 1.1 billion tons and produce 220 million extra tons of livestock products every year to feed what will be a global population of 9 billion people by 2050, and satisfy the demand for biofuels.

Land boom

The most dramatic indication of farming?s new boom is the rise in the price of British farmland, which has, on average, trebled to around $9,500 an acre over the past decade.

APNewsBreak: China ex-official's wife OKs lawyers

BEIJING (AP) ? The wife of disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai has agreed to be defended by two government-appointed lawyers in the murder case against her, two different lawyers with knowledge of the case said Saturday. Her decision could be the latest sign that a resolution to her case is near.

Gu Kailai's lawyers are based in Anhui province, where her trial is to be held. It is hundreds of kilometers from Chongqing city, where Gu is alleged to have killed a British businessman and where her husband, Bo Xilai, was the Communist Party boss until earlier this year.

A lawyer close to the case said Gu and her family have accepted the court appointment of Anhui lawyer Jiang Min, a director of the provincial lawyers' association, as her defense lawyer, along with a second lawyer, Zhou Yuhao of Wuhu, another Anhui city.

The lawyer did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of the case. Another lawyer with knowledge of Gu's case, also speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Jiang would represent Gu but did not know the name of her second lawyer.

Jiang and Zhou could not be reached for comment Saturday.

The government announced Thursday that Gu and a family aide had been charged with murdering Neil Heywood, a British businessman with whom the Bo family had close ties. Chinese authorities are now also expected to quickly move ahead with the trial, which has overshadowed preparations for a once-a-decade political transition later this year.

Bo had been expected to be part of the transition until a fall from power earlier this year after his former police chief fled to a U.S. consulate and divulged suspicions that Gu was involved in Heywood's death. Three months ago, the government announced that Gu and Zhang Xiaojun, the family aide, were being investigated and that Bo was being suspended from the powerful Politburo for discipline violations that were not detailed.

Bo remains under a separate, party investigation for unspecified wrongdoings. There have been no clear signals yet on what China's leaders plan for him.

Also unclear is why Gu's case is being heard in the central city of Hefei when Heywood died in Chongqing. But there are precedents for trials of politicians to be held in cities outside their power bases. The 2008 corruption trial of former Shanghai party boss Chen Liangyu was held in Tianjin.

Carl Minzer, a China law and governnace expert at the Fordham Law School, said Gu's acceptance of government-appointed lawyers may indicate behind-the-doors negotiations.

When announcing the charges against Gu and Zhang, Xinhua made clear the government considers the verdict a foregone conclusion. "The facts of the two defendants' crime are clear, and the evidence is irrefutable and substantial," the report said.

If found guilty of intentional homicide, Gu and Zhang face punishment ranging from more than 10 years' imprisonment to life in jail or the death penalty.

Probably in preparation for Gu's trial, French architect Patrick Devillers arrived in China last week from Cambodia, where he had been living. Devillers reportedly knew Gu and Bo when Bo was mayor of the northeastern city of Dalian in the 1990s. Devillers told French diplomats that he was traveling to China to assist in an investigation.

Team describes protective role of skin microbiota

Friday, July 27, 2012

Although immune cells in the skin protect against harmful organisms, until now, it has not been known if the millions of naturally occurring commensal bacteria in the skin?collectively known as the skin microbiota?also have a beneficial role. Using mouse models, the NIH team observed that commensals contribute to protective immunity by interacting with the immune cells in the skin. Their findings appear online on July 26th in Science.

The investigators colonized germ-free mice (mice bred with no naturally occurring microbes in the gut or skin) with the human skin commensal Staphylococcus epidermidis. The team observed that colonizing the mice with this one species of good bacteria enabled an immune cell in the mouse skin to produce a cell-signaling molecule needed to protect against harmful microbes. The researchers subsequently infected both colonized and non-colonized germ-free mice with a parasite. Mice that were not colonized with the bacteria did not mount an effective immune response to the parasite; mice that were colonized did.

In separate experiments, the team sought to determine if the presence or absence of commensals in the gut played a role in skin immunity. They observed that adding or eliminating beneficial bacteria in the gut did not affect the immune response at the skin. These findings indicate that microbiota found in different tissues?skin, gut, lung?have unique roles at each site and that maintaining good health requires the presence of several different sets of commensal communities.

This study provides new insights into the protective role of skin commensals, and demonstrates that skin health relies on the interaction of commensals and immune cells. Further research is needed, say the authors, to determine whether skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis may be caused or exacerbated by an imbalance of skin commensals and potentially harmful microbes that influence the skin and its immune cells.

Clipping nails, going barefoot and other office don'ts

Want to get ahead at work? Put your shoes on, and save your nail clipping for after hours.

By Allison Linn, TODAY

?Lori Hong was never particularly fond of the co-worker in the next cubicle, but there was one thing that really put her over the edge.

?He would freaking cut his nails at his desk,? said Hong, 32.

The nail clipping wasn?t just an occasional thing, either.

?I don?t know what vitamins (he was) taking, but he would clip his nails like two or three times a week,? she recalled.

After living in fear of a cuticle flying over the cubicle wall, or just of hearing that unmistakable clipping sound, Hong, who worked scheduling commercials for a television network, finally asked to be relocated to a new desk.

?No one should be doing that at work,? she said.

Workplace etiquette experts -- and much of the general public -- would agree. A survey of workplace pet peeves, released this week by temporary staffing firm Adecco, found nearly half of those surveyed are offended when people clip or bite their nails at work.

?It really elicits that gross factor because it is personal grooming,? said Jodi R.R. Smith, president of the etiquette training firm Mannersmith. ?This is what I categorize as: Should take place in the bathroom, and preferably the bathroom at home.?

Public nail-clipping is such a common problem that Smith sometimes uses it as an example in a role play on how to get a co-worker to stop doing something that annoys you.

Her advice: Be direct.

For example: ?I know that you probably have no idea, but when you clip your nails in the cubicle it totally grosses me out. I?m all for good grooming ? but if you could do it in the ladies room or at home I?d really appreciate it.?

Smith started her Boston-area etiquette consulting business after dealing so often with issues like these while working in human resources. She said other common workplace gripes include people who floss their teeth at their desk or take off their shoes at work.

The Adecco survey also found that more than four in 10 people were offended by co-workers removing their shoes at the office. The telephone survey of 1,010 people, conducted in July, also found that the majority of those surveyed do not want to see you come to work in ripped jeans, flip-flops, strapless clothing or backless tops or dresses.

It can be tempting to slip off your shoes on a hot day, or even clip that offending cuticle without heading to the bathroom, but that can actually harm your career, Smith warns.

?People think, ?Oh I?m a good worker, it?s not that big a deal,? but I?ve had managers over and over again tell me, ?Oh, Jodi, when we have to do another reduction I know who?s first on my list,?? Smith said. ?These soft social skills really make a difference.?

Tim Gates has seen plenty of workplace faux pas in his 17 years placing temporary workers for Adecco. Nail clipping and shoe removal have come up, as well as people applying deodorant at their desks and those who show up in T-shirts with inappropriate slogans or logos.

Usually a quick chat about appropriate dress or behavior is enough to straighten things out. But a little common sense might help avoid such issues as well.

?Some things should be done at home and some things should be done at work,? he said. ?Maybe keep those things separate.?

As for Hong, the cubicle dweller with the nail-clipping neighbor, she?s since left that job and moved from New York to Philadelphia because her husband was transferred.

She?s currently looking for work, and she jokes that one of the things she?s watching out for is whether her prospective co-workers clip their nails at their desks.

?Like, do you have that keychain with the nail clipper on it? That would be a turnoff,? she joked.

What hygiene habit bothers you most in the office?

TODAY's Meredith Vieira takes a look at some of the daily annoyances her co-workers face in their office space.

DENVER (AP) ? The university once attended by a man accused of killing 12 people in a Colorado movie theater confirmed on Wednesday that it received a suspicious package two days earlier that was turned over to authorities, but it wouldn't confirm its contents or sender.

The University of Colorado, Denver said the U.S. Postal Service delivered the package to its medical campus Monday, and it was immediately investigated and turned over to authorities within hours.

Fox News' website reported that former neuroscience graduate student James Holmes sent a notebook to the university containing scribblings of stick figures being shot and a written description of an upcoming attack. The package containing it was addressed to a psychiatrist at the school, the website reported. It was unclear if Holmes, 24, had had any previous contact with the person. The neuroscience program that he withdrew from on June 10 included professors of psychiatry.

He is accused of opening fire on a theater showing the new Batman movie, killing 12 people and injuring 58.

NBC News, citing unnamed sources, reported that Holmes told investigators to look for the package and that it described killing people.

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies refused to confirm the reports to The Associated Press.

U.S. Postal Service spokesman David Rupert said the agency's inspectors have no direct knowledge of the package reportedly containing the notebook. He said no one has contacted the Postal Service for assistance in the investigation.

Citing unnamed law enforcement sources, Fox News' website reported that Holmes sent the notebook in a package that had sat unopened since July 12.

The university said the report that the package sat uninvestigated that long is inaccurate. A spokeswoman declined to comment further, citing a gag order issued by a judge in the case.

Before the gag order was issued, police said Holmes received more than 50 packages at the school and his home that apparently contained ammunition, combat gear and explosive materials that he used in the attack and to booby-trap his Aurora apartment.

The building was evacuated for days while authorities rendered the apartment safe and collected evidence. Residents were allowed to return Wednesday evening.

Holmes' defense team also briefly visited the apartment building Wednesday and left without answering reporters' questions.

Holmes was allegedly stockpiling for the attack while he studied at the school's neuroscience program. He bought a shotgun and pistol in May, authorities say. On June 7, the date he took a year-end oral exam, he bought an assault rifle. He filed paperwork to leave the program three days later and did not provide a reason, the university has said.

On June 25, he filed an application to join a private gun range in eastern Colorado, but the club's owner, hearing what he described as a "bizarre" outgoing voice mail on Holmes' cellphone recorded in a low voice with heavy-breathing, told his staff to watch out for the man. Holmes never came to the range.

Holmes grew up in California.

Victims' families urge less usage of Holmes' name

NEW YORK (AP) ? Some relatives of people killed in the Colorado theater shooting are urging television news outlets to resist using alleged killer James Holmes' name and image in their stories for fear it gives him the infamy he craves.

Two families made that specific point to Anderson Cooper on CNN, who said Tuesday he has largely complied. Some news experts, while saying journalists must be attuned to these sensitivities, also warned against losing sight of the chief responsibility to inform the public.

Tom Teves, whose son Alex was among 12 people shot and killed Friday in Aurora, Colo., at a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," challenged TV news divisions during a Monday interview with Cooper.

"I would like to see CNN come out with a policy that said moving forward we're not going to talk about the gunman," Teves said. "What we're going to say is, a coward walked into a movie theater and started shooting people. He's apprehended. The coward's in jail. He will never see the light of day again. Let's move on to the victims. Never talk to him again."

Jordan Ghawi, whose 24-year-old sister Jessica was killed, said he has been talking publicly about her in part because "I don't want the media to be saturated with the shooter's name. The more air time these victims have, the less time that man gets his time on television.

"I can tell you the shooter in Virginia Tech and Norway and not long ago here in Denver," Ghawi told CNN on Friday. "I don't want that to happen here. I want the victims to be remembered rather than just this coward."

Cooper said he didn't use Holmes' name at all while he was on the air Monday, instead using phrases like "suspect," ''accused killer" or "accused shooter." He also tried to limit images of Holmes on his show, airing some from the suspect's court appearance Monday about halfway through his hour-long newscast.

He said his show was acting on its own, not from some CNN directive.

"Obviously my primary role is to report and be a journalist and tell people as much as possible," he said. "I think people know that person's name. They certainly know it by now and they've certainly seen the pictures over and over again."

Traveling to Colorado to report on the scene gives journalists a better idea of the community's sensitivity than they might otherwise get, he said.

Certainly there have been instances where TV news organizations hold back, like when there are particularly gruesome pictures or if reporting could threaten a hostage's life. American television networks resisted showing pictures of people jumping to their deaths from the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001 and, after the first day of the story, restricted use of video of the airplanes striking the Twin Towers.

But news executives constantly hear from people who don't want disturbing pictures shown, either because they are painful or give undue publicity to people responsible for brutal acts, said Marcy McGinnis, a journalism professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and a longtime former CBS News executive.

"If you follow that, unfortunately, you would basically get to the point where you would never show anything of a tragic nature because it always affects somebody personally," she said. "You can't really make the decision on what to show or not show based on what the people affected are thinking."

Who Holmes is and why he allegedly committed the atrocity is a major part of the story, she said, and digging into this could provide information that someday stops a person from doing something similar.

At the same time, most people were curious about what Holmes looked like when he made his first court appearance on Monday, she said. A larger issue for 24-hour news networks moving forward will be the temptation to use images of Holmes so often they become like video wallpaper, especially because photos of him with dyed hair and wild eyes are so striking.

Cooper said he didn't think it was an either-or situation. "I think you can be sensitive to a community's feelings and still report accurately and with as much detail as anybody else," he said.

He also doesn't want to contribute to increasing Holmes' infamy so copycats might follow.

He's backed in this opinion by James Fox, a professor in criminology at Northeastern University and one of the nation's foremost experts on mass murder. He's in favor of the media not naming these suspects to deny them the notoriety they often seeking. While most Americans see these people as monsters, some view them as heroes to emulate.

The media should also stop reaching for the kind of superlatives that a potential killer might seek to one-up by categorizing something as the "biggest, the deadliest, the worst, the first," Fox said. "You know what the problem with that is? Records are there to be broken."

Bill Wheatley, a veteran NBC News executive who now teaches at Columbia University, said that while it is important for networks to be sensitive, he doesn't believe that restricting the use of Holmes' name or picture will have any effect on whether someone does something similar.

He doesn't understand how television can cover a judicial process involving an alleged mass killer and not use the person's picture if it's available.

"Self-censorship can be very dangerous," Wheatley said. "I'm not indicating there aren't times when self-censorship is appropriate, but they should be rare. It's a slippery path, because at some point you find yourself not reporting information that the public deserves to have.

"The line is not always clear," he said.

Real Estate Home Network, REALTOR Tips on Home, Property and ...

If you are considering putting your home on the market, realize that it will take some preparation to get your home up to show quality. Experience is proving that when a home is staged, it can bring in up to many thousands of dollars more than the asking price. Also, staging helps in all types of markets. When there are a glut of homes for sale in an area, what they call a buyer?s market, the home that?s staged is more?noticeable?to buyers, and the price for it can?t be low-balled the same as a house that doesn?t look as good. Alternatively, in what they call a seller?s market, when there are few homes for sale and real estate is in high demand, staged homes again stand out, often attracting numerous offers. In this way, the price can get driven up as buyers compete with each other for the home. Either way, the homeowner who took the time to stage comes out the winner.

A great sale from home staging

Home staging can mean different things. Everything from just de-cluttering a home, or a rearrangement of furnature, up to making minor repairs, or even completely emptying the house and renting new furnature, are all considered efforts to stage a home. It appears that the more effort, and money, one puts into staging the home, the more they are repayed for their efforts when the home sells. Not only that, staged homes tend to sell much more quickly than as-is homes.

While many people these days are choosing to hire a professional home stager, and whether or not you can afford that is up to you. Professionals certainly have good ideas, and the experience to know what works and what doesn?t. However, there?s no reason you can?t do the prep work yourself, with a bit of research and applied effort.

There area few key elements to home staging that tend to be universal. First and foremost, getting rid of excess furniture and knick knacks seems to be key. A cluttered house becomes invisable to a viewer, blanketed under the acoutrements of someone elses life. If necessary, rent storage for all your extra stuff. If you have a storage room, empty it, or set it up to look like an office or wieght room, to highlight features you don?t use, but someone else might love. Sometimes all that?s needed is an objective rearranging of your things to create more space and order.

Another key area is repairs. Don?t launch into major renovations, but do fix up really obvious minor flaws, especially around the front door. First impressions are key. Keep in mind that people viewing your home will likely open cupboards and closets. Repair squeeks and sticks so they don?t notice a problem. Since doorways have a tendencey to get worn, consider new paint.

If you?re planning to sell your home, you might want to do a little research online to help with your staging ideas, or even look into hiring a professional in your area. No doubt you?ll be glad you did.

AT&T smartphone sales fall in 2Q, boosting net

FILE-In this May 6, 2012, file photo, a woman talks on her cell phone outside an AT&T store in New York. AT&T is seeing declining smartphone sales, leading to the best profitability ever in its wireless arm as it saves on phone subsidies. The largest telecommunications company in the U.S. says it activated 5.1 million smartphones in its latest quarter, down from 5.5 million in the same period a year ago. (AP Photo/CX Matiash,File)

(AP) ? AT&T Inc. on Tuesday posted the best profitability ever in its wireless arm, paradoxically because it sold fewer smartphones.

The largest telecommunications company in the U.S. said its subscribers are now holding on to their phones longer: The rate of upgrades to new phones was at a record low in the second quarter.

That's good news for the company because it to subsidizes each smartphone by hundreds of dollars to be able to sell it to customers for $99 or $199. IPhones, in particular, are expensive to sell, because Apple charges AT&T an average of around $650 for each one.

In March last year, AT&T started telling subscribers that they had to stay on contract for 20 months before they would be eligible for a new phone at the fully subsidized price. Before that, some high-paying customers had been eligible for upgrades after just 12 months.

"It appears our policy is working," John Stephens, AT&T's chief financial officer, told analysts on a conference call. He said another big contributor to the low upgrade rate was that many people upgraded late last year, when the latest iPhone debuted.

AT&T activated 5.1 million smartphones in its latest quarter, down from 5.5 million in the same period a year ago. That helped boost wireless operating income by 18 percent in the quarter, to $4.9 billion.

Analysts still expect AT&T's profits to take a dive this fall, when the new iPhone comes out. In what's become an annual ritual, buyers flood AT&T and Apple stores, and AT&T pays dearly for the privilege of having the nation's most popular network for iPhones.

The tighter upgrade policies don't seem to be scaring off AT&T subscribers. They were more loyal than ever in the quarter, helping AT&T outdo analyst expectations by adding a net 320,000 subscribers on contract-based plans in the quarter.

However, more than half of the new subscribers were tablet users, who pay less than smartphone users. Also, AT&T continues to lag Verizon Wireless, which already has more subscribers. Last week, Verizon reported adding 888,000 subscribers to its rolls in the quarter.

The strong wireless results helped boost Dallas-based AT&T's net income to $3.9 billion, or 66 cents per share, for the April to June period. That's up 8.7 percent from $3.6 billion, or 60 cents per share, a year earlier.

For the latest quarter, analysts expected earnings of 63 cents per share.

Revenue edged up 0.3 percent to $31.6 billion. Analysts were expecting $31.7 billion. If it weren't for the sale of its phone-books business in May, revenue would have risen 2 percent.

AT&T sold a controlling stake in the Yellow Pages division to private-equity firm Cerberus Capital for $950 million. The unit was profitable but shrinking, and AT&T wants to be a growing company.

AT&T's stock slipped 95 cents to $34.43 in midday trading Tuesday, retreating from levels close to its three-year high of $36.21, hit three weeks ago.

The traditional, non-wireless phone company side of AT&T still accounts for nearly half of the company's revenue. It's in decline, but the rate of decline slowed down in the second quarter, as the division that sells telecommunications services to businesses did well, and AT&T continued to sign up households to its U-Verse TV service.

Apple airs new celebrity iPhone 4S commercial: Marty Scorsese has a busy day

Apple has begun airing a new iPhone 4S commercial, again focusing on celebrities using Siri and this time featuring director Marty Scorsese having a busy day. The ad continues the campaign begun with Samuel L Jackson and Zooey Deschenel, and a double dose of John Malkovich and highlights:

  • Showing today's calendar
  • moving appointments
  • Finding friends
  • Checking traffic

With nary a network glitch nor misunderstood word to be found. That Apple is continuing to focus the latest round of iPhone 4S commercials on Siri, a feature still in beta that's experienced more than its fair share of growing pains in interesting. The celebrity aspect may or may not help, but showing viewers how Siri can be used in real-as-in-tv situations probably does increase interest.

For more on Siri and what Apple's virtual personal assistant can do, check out our ultimate guide to Siri.

So what do you think? Does Scorcese, a director, work better than actors like Jackson, Deschenel, and Malcovich? Does this ad do anything for you?

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? A Syrian government official says President Bashar Assad has named five officials to top security posts in a reshuffle of the regime's inner circle.

One of Tuesday's appointments replaces Assad's national security chief, who died last week after being wounded in a rebel bombing that also killed three other officials.

The new appointees are known regime figures, making it unlikely that the reshuffle will alter the government's efforts to defeat anti-Assad rebels.

Rebel groups are battling the government across Syria as the country's 16-month crisis grows increasingly violent and chaotic.

Last week's bomb attack struck a sharp blow to the regime's top brass, though government troops have now largely routed rebel forces fighting in the capital.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss security matters.
