'Betrayal blindness' buries the tragedy and hinders intimate relationships, authors say

EUGENE, Ore. -- (Feb. 27, 2013) -- "Betrayal violates us," write University of Oregon psychologists Jennifer Freyd and Pamela Birrell in the preface of a new book that tackles the devastating act and probes the deep underpinnings of why people cover it up.

"Blind to Betrayal" (John Wiley & Sons, 224 pages) hits the bookstands March 11. Freyd, an expert on betrayal and child abuse, and Birrell, a licensed clinical psychologist and senior instructor in the UO Department of Psychology, present case studies of unfaithful spouses, abuse by powerful authority figures and corrupt institutions. More importantly, they address coming to grips with betrayal and how doing so helps victims move on.

In recent years, the world's media have been filled with stories of betrayal, including sexual abuse of young boys by priests and by an assistant football coach at one of the nation's most-respected college football programs. Freyd often is among psychologists asked by the media to try to help people understand the underlying complexities.

"Everyone is touched by betrayal," said Freyd, currently the editor of the Journal of Trauma & Dissociation, in an interview. "Betrayal can happen in close personal relationships and in larger social contexts, such as the workplace. If we reflect on our own lives, we realize we have all experienced betrayal. What is the impact of betrayal? And why should we deal with it? Do we turn a blind eye or do we confront it?"

In the book's opening chapter, Freyd and Birrell present the case history of a married woman who was betrayed by her unfaithful husband. As the chapter closes, the reader is told: "On discovery of betrayal, a key response is to reorganize one's perceptions of what has happened -- to rewrite history. Betrayal therefore has a fundamental impact on one's perceptions of reality."

A paragraph later, the authors address the issue head on: "And yet, although betrayal is so common and insidious, very little has been written about it in the psychological literature. Psychology as a discipline may suffer from betrayal blindness. Part of the problem stems from a tendency in clinical psychology and psychiatry to focus on individuals and individual symptoms. As a result, the relations between people -- betrayal and its blindness -- are not seen."

For many people, Freyd said, the first betrayals often are experienced in early childhood where there is little option to confront the full reality. "In fact," she said, "it usually is safer for children to be blind to betrayal when it comes from the hands of a caregiver or someone the child trusts. In that situation, seeing the betrayal would likely only make matters worse because a natural response to seeing betrayal is to confront it in some way. If a child confronts a betraying caregiver his or her situation is likely to become worse, even threatening survival."

Blindness to betrayal is a survival response, she said, but there is a high price for not seeing the betrayal for what it is. "It keeps us from being fully strong, alive or healthy," she said. "It makes us vulnerable to more betrayal makes it difficult to have truly intimate relationships."

Blind to Betrayal tackles the why behind the blindness, details its toxicity and extensively explores the healing power of coming to grips with betrayals that occur. The book has garnered praise from early reviewers.

Autoresponder Services Boost Your Profits | CulturaPopulara.ro

Not too long ago, but, I made the switch to paying a month-to-month charge for limitless autoresponders. Am I wealthy (with money to burn)? Have I lost my mind?

Truly, I look into this move to paid autoresponders to be a smart choice. Right here are some causes why you may possibly want to spend for ?

Possibly you, like me, have web hosting that includes, zero cost of any additional charge, limitless autoresponders. That being the case, you may well be inclined to balk at any suggestion to start off paying for them.

Recently, but, I produced the switch to paying a month-to-month charge for unlimited autoresponders. Am I wealthy (with dollars to burn)? Have I lost my thoughts?

In fact, I consider this move to paid autoresponders to be a wise selection. Here are some causes why you could want to spend for an autoresponder service.

1. Sequential Autoresponders: Even though a wide range of web hosts deliver unlimited autoresponders, each and every autoresponder is only capable of sending 1 response. Developing business relationships with paid autoresponder solutions can hence improve your sales.

2. Tracking Capabilities: The autoresponders that come with your net host never have constructed-in tracking capabilities. Tracking customer response with paid autoresponder solutions can lead to more useful marketing campaigns.

three. Deliverability: A especially significant quantity of your newsletter subscribers are not having your newsletter if it is sent using your internet host?s mailing list plan. Enhancing newsletter delivery with paid autoresponder solutions will boost your bottom line.
direct response copywriter
four. Legal Protection: Considering that the e-mails you send are hosted on the autoresponder service?s servers, you are insulated from false accusations of sending spam (unsolicited commercial e-mail). Protect oneself legally with paid autoresponder solutions.

You could also consider ordering an autoresponder program (or script) that will enable you to run unlimited, sequential autoresponders from your sites. Even so, they can be pricey, demand some technical skill, and nevertheless have some disadvantages.

For instance, considering that you are hosting your personal autoresponders, you could possibly still have difficulties with deliverability and legal protection.

Paid autoresponder services, with their a number of positive aspects over other autoresponder systems, can enhance your online business income.

'She'll be right' not good enough at work - Stuff

OPINION: On April 30 an independent taskforce set up by the Government will make recommendations that will potentially have a major impact on many workplaces.

This report has attracted little by way of public attention even though it could significantly affect the way we work. Employers, employees and unions therefore need to be prepared.

New Zealand does not have an enviable record when it comes to health and safety in workplaces. Our rate of workplace deaths sits at more than four per 100,000 workers, which is significantly higher than Canada, Australia or Britain. Just as worrying, the number of injuries and deaths in New Zealand is not reducing as it is in comparable jurisdictions.

The Pike River mine tragedy highlighted the inherent problems with New Zealand's current approach. New Zealand relies on a regulatory system for health and safety that is not prescriptive, but based on a series of principles.

It essentially requires employers to self-regulate. This is fine in theory if everyone meets their obligations and there is a sufficiently well-organised, skilled and resourced enforcement agency in place. But as Pike River showed, this is not necessarily the case.

There has also been criticism that the current health and safety system does not take into account the modern face of employment relationships. Factors such as sub-contracting, casualisation, migrant workers and so on make applying a "one size fits all" approach problematic.

The Government has therefore appointed an independent taskforce to review New Zealand's workplace health and safety systems. The Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 is more than 20 years old, and questions are being asked as to whether it is up to the task of keeping workers safe.

The taskforce comprises six members drawn from business, unions and those with specialist health and safety expertise. Its role is to recommend practical measures to the Government that will reduce the numbers of workplace deaths and serious injuries by 25 per cent by 2020.

The taskforce conducted a public consultation process through a series of 32 meetings in late 2012. The report on the feedback received at these consultation meetings makes for interesting reading.

Participants noted that the legal health and safety framework was difficult to understand and too open to interpretation to be useful in a practical context. Most people who run businesses are not lawyers, and neither are their employees. The key requirement in the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, to take "all practicable steps" to ensure the safety of workers, can be interpreted in various ways, and is unhelpful as a guide.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, which incorporates the Department of Labour, comes in for criticism in terms of being under-resourced and not having sufficient numbers of well-trained staff. This was evidenced by the lack of mine inspectors before the Pike River tragedy.

The ministry's role as a reactive enforcement agency rather than a proactive educative one is highlighted as potentially undermining the effectiveness of the health and safety framework.

One area singled out is the role of business leaders in health and safety. Some of the feedback calls for greater corporate accountability, including the introduction of a criminal charge of corporate manslaughter. This could see managers and/or company directors jailed if employees are killed at work where appropriate safety systems have not been put in place.

A focus on profit over health and safety was also identified as an issue behind New Zealand's poor health and safety record. Others focused on a failure of Mobie to prosecute employees who ignored safety instructions or improperly used equipment.

Another interesting issue identified was the apparent complacency of workers when it comes to workplace health and safety issues. A variety of explanations have been put forward, including New Zealand's traditional "she'll be right" mentality and a fear of being persecuted for raising concerns, through to a lack of training on health and safety issues and the lack of qualified professional consultants in this area.

Submitters also noted that the quality of advice received from external consultants and from Mobie itself was variable at best. Some criticised the ACC system, which they argued serves to hide the true costs of workplace accidents and provides workers with financial cover without apportioning blame.

Some submitters suggested that parents and the education system were to blame by wrapping young people entering the workforce in "cotton wool". Their first employer therefore becomes responsible for imbuing a sense of personal responsibility and safety at work.

Given that Australia and Britain have broadly similar education systems to ours, one wonders how they have been so successful in reducing workplace deaths and injuries compared to New Zealand if this really is a causative factor.

So what are we likely to see the taskforce recommend? An overhaul of the health and safety function within Mobie will definitely result. Work on this appears to be under way already.

Of more interest will be the impacts on employers and workers. We may see a greater focus on education in the workplace for both managers and staff and a greater degree of prescription when it comes to health and safety, particularly in more dangerous work environments.

I would also expect to see greater obligations around corporate responsibility and possibly even the introduction of criminal charges against managers and directors who fail to take steps to look after their staff.

There will need to be a significant change of attitude towards health and safety in the workplace if we are to change our appalling record of deaths and serious injuries.

GOP: Leaked WH immigration plan "counterproductive"

Updated 6:55 p.m. ET

The seemingly endless budget fight is sucking much of the air out of Washington, but another big initiative - immigration reform - is slowly taking shape.

A draft of a comprehensive White House immigration proposal was obtained yesterday by USA Today, and one key Republican senator immediately deemed the president's plan "dead on arrival."

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a Hispanic lawmaker involved with a bipartisan group of senators crafting a compromise proposal, said it was a "mistake for the White House to draft immigration legislation without seeking input from Republican members of Congress," calling the proposal "half baked and seriously flawed," and declaring, "If actually proposed, the president's bill would be dead on arrival in Congress."

White House sources tell CBS News Senior White House Correspondent Bill Plante that this was not a planned leak. The sources add that the big concern is that the leak makes it appear that they are trying to get ahead of the Senate negotiations. They say that's not the case - the Senate process is going well and the White House is very much focused on supporting it.

Rubio griped that the bill "does nothing to address guest workers or future flow, which serious immigration experts agree is critical to preventing future influxes of illegal immigrants."

The White House proposal did, however, contain several big items that would be included in any comprehensive reform package. It would provide additional funding for border security and require employers to verify the immigration status of new employees within four years. Crucially, the plan would also allow undocumented immigrants to become legal, permanent residents within eight years and create a new "Lawful Prospective Immigrant" visa to accommodate the interim status of those trekking the path to citizenship.

The White House has defended the leaked proposal, saying it is an incomplete draft that is only being crafted as a fallback option in case the bipartisan talks in Congress "break down."

"We will be prepared with our own plan" if congressional action on the issue stalls, White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough said today on "Face the Nation."

"There's no evidence that [the group's efforts] have broken down yet," he added. "We're continuing to support that; we're involved in those efforts by providing them technical assistance, providing them ideas. And I hope Republicans and Democrats up there don't get involved in some typical Washington back and forth sideshow here."

Despite the incomplete draft that leaked, McDonough said, any comprehensive immigration proposal endorsed by the White House would contain the four key components President Obama laid out in a speech in Las Vegas several weeks ago: Strengthened border security, an employer verification system to crack down on illegal hiring, a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States, and reforms to the legal immigration system.

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., called the leaked proposal "counterproductive" on ABC's "This Week" and questioned the president's motives, accusing him of seeking a partisan advantage instead of finding a solution. "Leaking this out does set things in the wrong direction," he said. "By putting these details out without a guest worker program, without addressing future flow, by giving advantage to those who cut in front of the line...that tells us he's looking for a partisan advantage and not a bipartisan solution."

"There are groups in the House and Senate working together to get this done," he said, "and when he does things like this, it makes it much more difficult to do that. And that's why I think this particular move - very counterproductive."

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., another lawmaker involved in the bipartisan congressional immigration talks, agreed, saying the leaked plan "raises the question that many of us continue to wonder about: Does the president really want a result, or does he want another cudgel to beat up Republicans?"

McCain complained that the president "has had no communication with Republicans on the issue, unlike the previous four presidents that I've dealt with."

But despite the grousing from congressional Republicans about the leaked proposal, they can't say they didn't see it coming: In his Las Vegas speech, the president made it clear that he would submit his own proposal if Congress proved unable to reach an agreement. "If Congress is unable to move forward in a timely fashion," he said, "I will send up a bill based on my proposal and insist that they vote on it right away."

I've been trying to update my PC version of Evernote for a number of months with no success, it returns an error box with "unable to download update. Please try again later". I also have installed on my iPhone and iPad and those update fine. I thought it may have been due to restrictions in place on my work PC but I have the same error on my home Windows laptop. Any suggestions?

NBA dunk contest: Terrence Ross beats Jeremy Evans in finals

Toronto's Terrence Ross beat out Utah's Jeremy Evans, the defending champion, to win the NBA slam dunk competition Saturday night in Houston.

Ross, who earned 58 percent of the vote in the championship round, paid tribute to Vince Carter on his first dunk of the finals, as he donned an old-school No. 15 Carter Raptors jersey and executed a 360 dunk after catching the ball mid-air after someone else bounced it off the side of the backboard. Ross raced in from the baseline to catch it, then put it through with authority.

His second dunk came after leaping over a ball boy, then putting the ball through his legs for another awe-inspiring slam. As the camera panned to Kevin Garnett, the Celtics star's face contorted to confirm the dunk's sheer nastiness. (His first-round dunk wasn't too shabby either, and evidenced by the attached video.)

MORE: Saturday's 3-point and skills competition results

Evans also showed his creativity in the finals. Evans jumped over an easel shrouded in a black sheet, then removed the sheet the reveal a picture of himself. Yes kids, he just posterized himself, then signed it.

Evans also had one of the more creative dunks in the preliminary round. He scored only a 47, but he gets big props for the use of the biggest prop ? former Jazz center Mark Eaton, who stands 7-4.

Evans needed several attempts before he could complete the dunk, but the end result was worth the wait.

Another intriguing first-round dunk came from the Knicks? James White, who brought out flight attendants and a flight crew to jazz up his from-the-free-throw-line jam. White, too, needed a few attempts to execute, but he carded a 50 for his effort.

The first round was judged by former Houston Rockets Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, Dikembe Mutombo, Rudy Tomjanovich and Yao Ming.

Kenneth Faried, James White, 2007 dunk champion Gerald Green and Eric Bledsoe also were in the field, while Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade were among the All-Stars taking in the show.

Hall of Famers Bill Russell and Julius Erving, singer Alicia Keys, rapper Drake, director Spike Lee and comedian Chris Tucker were among those sitting courtside. Keys is performing at halftime of Sunday's All-Star game.

Bahrain says arrests eight on "terror-related" charges

DUBAI (Reuters) - Bahrain has arrested eight nationals in a militant cell with links to Iran, Iraq and Lebanon, the interior minister of the U.S.-allied Gulf Arab state said in remarks published on Sunday.

The official Bahrain News Agency reported the minister, Shaikh Rashed bin Abdullah al Khalifa, as saying the eight had received training in weapons and explosives and also obtained funding from outside Bahrain.

News of the arrests came after two people were killed on Thursday on the second anniversary of an uprising to demand democratic reforms and the unrest, the most violent in recent months, continued into Saturday. The government has accused opposition groups of being linked to Shi'ite power Iran.

"Recent media reports have revealed the discovery of a Bahraini terrorist cell with links to Iran, Iraq and Lebanon," the agency quoted Sheikh Rashed as saying in a statement.

"The Ministry of Interior confirms these reports and also confirms the arrest of eight Bahrainis on terror-related charges."

He did not elaborate on the media reports, adding further details would be released upon completion of investigations.

The minister made no direct link between the arrests and political unrest. But in another part of the statement he criticized an escalation in street violence in the past week which he said had seen the use of a widening array of weapons by anti-government protesters including live ammunition.

The violence has clouded the atmosphere around talks begun on February 10 between the mostly Shi'ite Muslim opposition and the Sunni Muslim-dominated government to find a way out of the impasse over Shi'ite demands for more democracy.

The kingdom, base for the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, has been in political turmoil since the protests erupted in 2011, led by majority Shi'ites demanding an end to the monarchy's political domination and full powers for parliament.

Thirty-five people died during the unrest and two months of martial law that followed, the government said, although the opposition puts that number at more than 80.

Brad Guzan: ?You can?t work out a points total because football is a mad game that you can?t predict."

Brad Guzan says Aston Villa need to forget points and control their own destiny

Brad Guzan is refusing to plot a passage to safety . . . because he knows it won?t go to plan.

The Villa keeper reckons it?s pointless highlighting specific games as potential victories as there?s just as much chance of upsetting one of the big boys.

?You can?t work out a points total because football is a mad game that you can?t predict,? he said,

?Every weekend there are shocks.

?There are results no-one would have thought would happen, and they do.

?That?s what makes the game so exciting for the fans and nerve-wracking for players.

?You can?t look at the fixture list and say you will get this result here and that result there.

?You prepare each week for a specific game and that is your focus.?

Guzan understands the mammoth task on the horizon but admits he is happy it is already in Villa?s own hands.

?We want to be in control of our own destiny and it be within our power to stay up,? he added.

?We want to go out there and put together performances that we can be proud of, pick up points and get results.

?If we look at the results after our game and see the teams around us have won or lost it doesn?t mean anything because there is so much football to be played.

?There are so many points up for grabs, we have to just focus on ourselves.?

Kenya government sued for police brutality in 2007

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? The Kenyan government is being sued for police brutality in the violence following the 2007 election.

The lawsuit comes as Kenya prepares for a new election on March 4 amid warnings from international human rights groups that the police are not ready to prevent electoral violence while refraining from human rights violations.

The families of seven people shot dead five years ago and eight wounded survivors this week filed a lawsuit to sue the Kenyan government claiming the shots were fired by police during a dispute over who won Kenya's 2007 presidential election.

Five human rights groups are also part of the suit against the government.

Government records show police shot dead 405 of the more than 1,100 people who died in the post-election violence following a dispute in the presidential race in 2007 general elections. Many of them were shot in the back, according to documents filed Wednesday by law firm Nderitu Partners and Advocates on behalf of the group late Wednesday.

According to the suit unlawful orders were given to the police and the government failed to train police on lawful methods of how to deal with civil unrest. And the government did not investigate the abuses.

Those suing the government are from western Kenya. In the 2007 elections, the majority of the people in western Kenya supported the main presidential challenger Raila Odinga ? who polls had consistently put as the front runner ? and took to the streets in violent protests after the electoral authority announced President Mwai Kibaki had been re-elected.

The violence ended after former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan brokered a peace deal in which Odinga became prime minister in a coalition government. As part of the peace arrangement the coalition government promised to adopt a new constitution, reform the judiciary and police force.

A 2008 government investigation into what caused the violence found that mistrust of the judiciary, which was tainted by allegations of corruption, fueled the violence as politicians chose to protest instead of going to the courts to seek justice. The police force was seen to have taken sides in the chaos fuelling the conflict, the report said.

Efforts to improve the police system have been criticized as ineffectual but ongoing reforms on the judiciary have received praise and have led to recommendations that the government should fire 13 out of the country's 53 high court judges.

For decades Kenya's police have been criticized by advocacy groups for ineffectiveness, endemic corruption, human rights violations and impunity.

A bribe-taking culture exists in the force and officers live in deplorable conditions, are poorly paid, under-equipped and understaffed, outgoing police spokesman Eric Kiraithe admitted last year. "Corruption in the police force is deep and wide," he said.

Human Rights Watch, in a report titled "High Stakes: Political Violence and the 2013 Elections in Kenya," released earlier this month, says police shortcomings are highlighted by the continuing rural violence that in 2012 and early 2013 that has claimed more than 477 lives and displaced about 118,000 people.

"Many of these incidents have been linked to pre-election maneuvering as local politicians mobilize support. The police and other authorities have repeatedly failed to prevent the violence or hold those responsible to account," the rights groups said.

During violent clashes in 2012 and early 2013 the police frequently failed to intervene and when they did, they often used excessive and indiscriminate force, Human Rights Watch said.

Amnesty International at the end of January criticized the pace of reforms in the police force and cast doubt on its preparedness to handle possible violence during the or after the elections.

"The laws guiding the police reform have not been put into practice in time for the general elections. As a result, the very same policing structures blamed by many for serious human rights violations during the 2007-2008 post-election violence remain in place for the 2013 elections," Amnesty International said in the report titled "Police Reform in Kenya: A Drop in the Ocean."

The National Police Service Inspector General David Kimaiyo said Wednesday that the police are ready to tackle any challenges that may be presented by the elections.

GOP Haggles over Hagel

GOP Haggles over Hagel

February 14, 2013 - Thursday

If there's anyone who doesn't feel the love this Valentine's Day, it's Chuck Hagel. After a disastrous Senate hearing two weeks ago, the former Nebraska Senator only gained one new endorsement: Iran's. Since then, even more questions have bubbled to the surface about the potential Defense Secretary's undisclosed speeches, his "cozy" relationship with U.S. foes, and his apparent lack of awareness about America's greatest threats. The developments were so unsettling that even moderate Republicans, like Sen. Susan Collins (Maine), have decided that, on second thought, Hagel is "not well-suited for the tremendous challenges our country faces during this dangerous era in our history." Later, she spelled out four pages of reasons why.

Hagel's performance created so many questions that the majority of Republicans still refuse to end the debate and vote. When Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) brought up the nomination this afternoon, he was two votes shy of the 60 he needed for cloture. And already, the Left's cries of "obstruction" are underway. "The majority leader knows full well that the reason why cloture was denied... is because there are reasonable requests being made on this side for additional information," said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) "and I hope and trust that that information will be provided here in the next few days and when we come back from the recess. We'll have another vote and another opportunity for senators to express themselves. But this is not any attempt to kill this nomination. This is not a filibuster."

For now, the GOP is in agreement: the administration needs to be more forthcoming on Benghazi--and until they are, the debate on Chuck Hagel is not over. And that's just fine with us. As far as FRC is concerned, the only qualification that President Obama was looking for in a Defense Secretary was a Republican who would give him cover as he undermines our military and national security by advancing his radical social agenda within the ranks of our Armed Services. Hagel's poor performance before his former colleagues, his opposition to America's key allies, and (as his hearing showed) an inability to cope under the pressure suggests that he is not fit to manage the world's most elite fighting force. America can do better!

Speaking of demanding better, that's exactly what the Senate didn't do yesterday in confirming judicial activist and elitist William Kayatta to the First Circuit Court of Appeals. Only 12 conservatives held the line on judicial activism by opposing his nomination: Roy Blunt (Mo.), John Boozman (Ark.), Tom Coburn (Okla.), Jim Inhofe (Okla.), Mitch McConnell (Ky.), Rand Paul (Ky.), Jim Risch (Idaho), Marco Rubio (Fla.), Tim Scott (S.C.), Jeff Sessions (Ala.), Richard Shelby (Ala.), and David Vitter (La.). Click here to let them know that you appreciate their principled stance!

Grade Expectations

While President Obama is in Georgia stumping for universal preschool, the real pathway to prosperity runs right through the home. "Study after study shows that the sooner a child begins learning, the better he or she does down the road," the President insisted Tuesday. "And for poor kids who need help the most, this lack of access to preschool education can shadow them for the rest of their lives. So let's do what works and make sure none of our children start the race of life already behind."

Unfortunately for President Obama and the rest of his big government buddies, a lack of education isn't the only thing that can shadow children for the rest of their lives. While academics are important, they're no substitute for a married mother and father when it comes to predicting future success. FRC's Dr. Henry Potrykus makes a compelling case for focusing on a different kind of homework--maintaining stable families. "Public policy assumes, and needs no persuasion, that education attainment is a good to be promoted. The same assumption does not hold for family intactness."

Politicians like President Obama are eager to replace families with expensive and intrusive government programs, which, Henry points out, may have less influence on a child's well-being than an institution that costs taxpayers nothing: a married mom and dad. In his latest paper, U.S. Social Policy Dependence on the Family, he explains that family intactness "is roughly as important as high school education and more important than college education in influencing outcomes of public policy interest." This chart says it all. In the columns where the colored area is darker blue, family intactness has a proportionately greater influence in magnitude than the education variable. In the columns where the colored area is whiter, family intactness has a proportionately smaller influence than the education variable.

During the GOP debates, Sen. Rick Santorum was criticized for suggesting that the family would be a more powerful and permanent solution to our nation's problems of poverty and crime than any entitlement Washington could concoct. But that should be an especially persuasive argument for libertarians, who insist on getting government out of our lives and out of our wallets. And unlike the President's plan, which could waste billions, it doesn't cost taxpayers anything to stop producing policy that inhibits natural family formation. Besides, as the Wall Street Journal points out, "If the regular public schools aren't working... does it make sense to layer on another defective education level? ... It's further proof that liberals measure government success not by results, but by good intentions and how much the government spends."

Texas Lassoes More Leaders for Scouts

With help from the state's highest ranking Eagle Scout, Gov. Rick Perry, Texas is rounding up plenty of support for the Boy Scouts' current policy. Close to 40 Lone Star State elected officials have signed an open letter to the organization, urging them to stand by a century of family values. "Capitulating to the liberal social agenda not only undermines the very principles of scouting, but sets the stage for the erosion of an organization that has defined the American experience for generations of young men," the group writes. "[T]he contemplated national policy [of allowing homosexuals] would throw to the wolves chartering organizations and scout troops that choose to stick with scouting's historic and legally protected policy... Rest assured that while adopting this ill-considered and wrongly devised policy might earn temporary kudos, you can never do enough to appease those who want to see the scouts robbed of their moral authority." Hats off to Texas and the other states, who are starting to rally their troops before the BSA's May vote.

Seven reasons to love MMA this Valentine?s Day

Happy Valentine's Day, Cagereaders! In honor of the day, let's take a look at some reasons to love mixed martial arts.

Heavyweight division to love. Remember when the UFC heavyweight division was a joke? No longer. UFC 160 will feature a title bout between Cain Velasquez and Antonio Silva, and Junior dos Santos will fight Alistair Overeem.

So much MMA on television. MMA was once the province of pay-per-view and occasional specials on network and cable television. Now, with Bellator on Spike, the UFC on Fox's networks, and the World Series of Fighting on NBC Sports Network, a fight fan doesn't have to drop $55 a month to see any fighting at all.

New divisions giving opportunities to fighters who wouldn't have gotten them in the past. A few weekends ago, we watched Demetrious Johnson defend his 125-lb UFC championship belt against John Dodson. Next weekend, we'll watch women's bantamweights fight in the UFC for the first time. Two years ago, neither division existed.

Blood. In most sports, a little bit of blood stops the action. In MMA, we revel in it. It flows from the faces of fighters, colors the canvas a morbid red, and changes fight shorts from white to pink.

Amazing knockouts. Is there a more pure moment in sports than when one fighter hits the other cleanly, creating a knockout that somehow quiets and thrills a crowd all at once?

Bones and Spider and Rush. Jon Jones, Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre are all UFC champions who have easily beat the challenges in front of them, and are constantly adding to their arsenals in fights. It's easy to sit back and wish they would fight each other, but it's also nice to just sit back and enjoy every time they step in the cage.

No off-season. In covering football, February through August can be agonizing because there are no actual games. For the Olympics, the wait is even worse because it spans years. But there is always another fight around the corner. Weekends without fights -- whether in the UFC, Bellator, World Series of Fighting and Invicta, or at the local hotel ballroom -- are rare. If you want to watch a fight, you can. MMA is never that far away, and that's a really good reason to love it.

Why do you love this sport? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Harbor seals from Virginia Aquarium get workout while in Florida

Harbor seals from the Virginia aquarium are getting a workout while on vacation in Florida.

A photo was taken as they practiced getting in their carriers.

Aquarium officials say this practice will make it easier when it?s time for the seals to come home.

They were sent to Florida while their habitat was worked on.

It?s expected to be finished next month.

Thirsty Middle East Is Exhausting Its Water Supply

The Middle East has depleted its water reserves at a frightening pace over the last several years, according to a new study.

From 2002 to 2009, the region lost enough water from groundwater, soil, snowmelt and reservoirs to fill the entire Dead Sea ? about 117 million acre-feet (144 cubic kilometers). The majority of that water loss comes from aggressive pumping of groundwater.

The findings were published online Jan. 10 in the journal Water Resources Research.

Sky scale

The team was using satellite data from NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) project, which measures the change in mass on the Earth below it. The project's primary goal was to track changes in ice sheets.

"GRACE is like a giant scale in the sky, it responds to gravity changes, the satellites are perturbed and they move around in their orbits due to changes in mass," said study co-author James Famiglietti, a hydrologist at the University of California, Irvine.

The twin satellites take advantage of the fact that gravity's tug on a spot is proportional to its mass. And water is by far the heaviest thing that changes on Earth, so gravity changes can reveal how much water has been lost. [6 Weird Facts About Gravity]

Dramatic losses

Famiglietti and his colleagues found that the Tigris Euphrates Basin, which spans parts of Turkey, Syria, Iran and Iraq, lost an average of 16 million acre-feet (20 cubic kilometers) a year during the period of the study. By analyzing other data that tracked other water levels, such as the amount of snowmelt and reservoir levels in the region, the team concluded that most of the depletion came from pumping groundwater.

A drought during that time period may have depleted reservoirs and snowmelt, causing people to more aggressively pump groundwater, Famiglietti told LiveScience.

The findings are even more worrisome, because climate change is projected to reduce rainfall in the region, causing even more water troubles, he said.

Improve efficiency

The vast depletion of groundwater could spell trouble in a region that already has many conflicts over water. To prevent depletion, the region needs to improve how efficiently they harness water.

Because 80 percent of the world's water usage is for agriculture, employing water-sparing techniques like precision drip irrigation, which aims water under the soil straight to a plant's roots, could avert catastrophe, he said.

Tracking groundwater use is also essential, Famiglietti said.

"Groundwater use has historically not been monitored," he said. "If we think of it as our money in the bank, we better keep track of the account balance."

Sony Developing Oliver Twist Re-Imagining Dodge & Twist

olivertwist1 Sony Developing Oliver Twist Re Imagining Dodge And Twist

Re-imaginings and literary adaptations have become Hollywood?s bread and butter, and it doesn?t appear that trend will be slowing down anytime soon. Sony is updating the classic Charles Dickens? tale Oliver Twist into a more adventurous story titled Dodge and Twist.

Dodge and Twist will feature characters from the original story, but will likely look very different from any adaptation of the novel we?ve seen before. The story takes place 20 years after the events of Oliver Twist, and features Oliver and Artful Dodger on opposite sides of the law, embroiled in an affair to steal the Crown Jewels.

The project is based on an idea by Ahmet Zappa and not on the book of the same name by Tony Lee. Lee?s graphic novel is set 12 years after?Oliver Twist?as opposed to 20 and revolves around Oliver being forced to assist the Artful Dodger in stealing in the Koh-I-Noor diamond from the Great Exhibition of 1851. Lee?s book was never published, but it was released as an ebook.

If you think the two stories sounds similar, you aren?t alone. Lee took to Twitter to express his displeasure at not being credited and reveal that he met with Zappa about the idea in 2008. Check out some of his tweets below.

It?ll be interesting to see if any legal action is taken by Lee, because it definitely sounds like he has ground for some compensation, especially if the film does get made. Then again, the characters are now public domain, so the subtle differences may be enough in the eyes of a court.

Cole Haddon, the creator of the NBC?s upcoming Dracula show, is writing the script, with Matt Tolmach and Zappa producing.

What do you think Dodge and Twistas an updated version of the characters? Do agree with Lee that his graphic novel was ripped off? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Under Armour launches Armour39 performance tracking system, we go hands-on

Armour39 hands-on

Under Armour has always touted the scientific underpinnings of its sports apparel. From moisture wicking to heat trapping and everything in between, the company is quick to assert that it isn't just another athletic clothing company. But, performance enhancing shirts and pants have their limitations and, arguably, performance monitoring is a far more interesting and burgeoning field. In 2011 it dabbled with E39, a compression shirt with a space to insert a "bug" that included and accelerometer and heart rate monitor. Today, at an event in beautiful, chilly New York City, it officially unveiled the next evolution of that toe-dipping, Armour39. While there may be a shirt in the future, for now the system consists of a traditional chest strap, an iPhone app and an optional watch for those that don't like to carry their expensive smartphone with them on runs.

Finding Family Fun on a Disney Cruise or Why We Skipped the Kids ...

There is no shortage of activities and entertainment aboard a Disney Cruise, but many of the activities seem to involve having kids in one place and parents in the other. ?There's certainly a time and place for that, but we also wanted to find ways to make memories that involved all of us. Vacation is first and foremost a way to reconnect as a family, so we started looking for low key ways we could spend some time together as a family onboard the Disney Magic.? Not only did we want to find ways to spend time together that we don?t normally enjoy at home, we also wanted to find places on the ship where we could enjoy some privacy and make some memories together.

How to Find some Family Time Aboard a Disney Cruise

~A quiet place to fold paper airplanes is a great way to spend a day at sea~

1.?????? Grab a table and a board game at Diversions.? We were onboard the ship for several days before we even knew that this place existed.? Apparently, we weren?t the only ones, because it was almost always empty when we visited. ?Board games, foosball, and a Wii with tons of games are available for entertainment.? The kids loved grabbing a table, a game, and a parent to enjoy some concentrated family time.

~A bit of audience participation in the Cabaret Show~

2.?????? Don?t miss the Cabaret shows. Ignore the less than family friendly name; these shows are some of the best on the shop, and a great way to enjoy some time before or after dinner.? ?Disney has planned this hour perfectly.? It falls between dinner and the main show (or the main show and dinner, if you have late dining) and fills that hour with family friendly fun.?? During our cruise, we saw a hypnotist, a comedy juggler, and a comedy percussion show.? These shows were the highlight of the trip for the kids!

~Goofy Pool and Funnel Vision~

3. ?Plan a late night swim and movie.? Movies are shown throughout the day on the Funnel Vision, a giant screen on the funnel above the pool.? But they are hard to see in the bright sunlight of day, and it is even harder to get a deck chair during the crowded sunlight hours.? Movies at night are a much better choice, especially for older kids who aren?t ready for bed as soon as dinner is over.? In the evening, the deck is very quiet, so it is a perfect low key way to enjoy the pool and some family time.?

4. ?Order Room Service.? Doing things that would never happen at home is one the things that makes vacations memorable. Obviously, we don?t have room service at home, and despite the requests, I am not likely to implement that feature anytime soon. ? ?Ordering room service for breakfast gave us a much more leisurely start to our day, and was certainly appreciated by the kids who had been staying up way too late watching movies and swimming.? It was actually one of the best memories of the trip to sit on the balcony and just enjoy a quiet breakfast together.? The kids loved it so much that they requested room service for lunch, and we enjoyed a lazy lunch that included sitting together and watching old cartoons.?

~Making Flubber~

5.Check your Schedule for Kids Club Open House. During regular child care hours parents are not allowed in the kids? club area for safety reason, but there are Open House hours scheduled every day.? This is a perfect time to try out some new activities with your kids, like making Flubber or Chocolate Chip Cookies, or just play with the really cool toys. ? Doing science experiements and other messy activities is something I wish I had more time to do at home, so this was a perfect way to spend time with my boys.

~There's always time for Shuffleboard~

Tips for Scheduling Your Day Aboard the Disney Magic

Once we were onboard the ship for a couple of days, we finally hit a rhythm that worked great to maximize our family time.? Most of the nightly shows on the Main Stage were also available as a matinee.? Attending the matinee freed up some time in the evening after dinner and allowed us to hit the pool and other areas when it was much less crowded.? In the evening, we would enjoy our dinner at the early dining time, and finish just in time to get a good seat for the Cabaret shows.? At the end of the show, we would race back to our room and grab our swimsuits.? The majority of the other guests were either at dinner or watching the show on the Main Stage, so the pool was relatively empty.?? The bonus of the quiet time on the ship was that the kids could enjoy a movie played on the Funnel Vision while they swam and the mister and I could enjoy the hot tub, or just sit and talk quietly on the deck.? Also, there was no need for sunscreen.? Double Score!!

~Disney Cruise Lines provided our tickets aboard the Disney Magic.? They did not require that I express a particular viewpoint and all opinions are my own~

Young Indian teacher hospitalised in ?very serious ... - Minivan News

Young Indian teacher hospitalised in ?very serious condition? after alleged rape thumbnail

A young Indian teacher working on the island of Dhangethi in Alif Dhaal Atoll has been hospitalised?after a group of people broke into her home on Sunday night and allegedly raped her.

The 25 year-old woman is in a ?very serious condition? following the attack, said the Island Council President Azim Adam.

?They broke in [to her house] around 2:15am. I came to know about it at 4:00am and I instantly reported it to the police. The girl is now in the atoll hospital in a very serious condition,? Adam said.

A source close to the victim said she was in the hospital?s intensive care unit but was ?bleeding uncontrollably.?

?We have put seven pints of blood into her but she is still bleeding. It is a very serious issue. We are planning to send her to India, there is not much more we are able to do here,? the source said, adding that her brother had arrived in the Maldives and was on the island.

The Indian High Commission in the capital Male? said it had been informed of the incident and had received the woman?s details from the police.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) Spokesperson Sub Inspector Hassan Haneef said specialist teams were investigating the incident. He could not confirm whether any arrests had been made, but said further details would be released to the media at a later stage.

Local media?reported that the woman was teaching a private computer course on the island.

Island Council President Adam said the young woman had been working on the island for less than a month, and described her as a ?very kind person who was very friendly towards the local islanders?.

Dhangethi is the third largest populated island of Alif Dhaal Atoll, with a population of around 1200 people.

An official from the Indian High Commission noted that a similar case had occurred in 2011 involving an Indian nurse working on an island in the Maldives.

?I told the police that [in 2011] there was a rape case like this whereby a nurse was raped on one of the islands. However in that instance all of the suspects were later acquitted in court,? the official added.
