Syrian troops apparently halt Homs shelling as some wounded are evacuated
BEIRUT, Lebanon ? Syrian Arab Red Crescent workers rescued a small number of wounded civilians Friday from the hard-hit Baba Amr neighborhood of the city of Homs as representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian government negotiated over a ceasefire that would allow still larger evacuations.
The barrage of mortar and rocket fire that had rained down on the neighborhood came to a halt apparently for the first time in three weeks as the negotiations took place.
Two journalists wounded Wednesday in a hail of fire that killed two of their colleagues were apparently not among the seven women and children rescued Friday and taken to a local Homs hospital. But diplomatic efforts to bring the wounded journalists to safety were continuing, and an ICRC spokesman in Damascus said Red Cross officials were trying to "evacuate all persons in need of help with no exception whatsoever."
It was unclear whether that would include not just the journalists, Edith Bouvier of France and Paul Conroy of Britain, but also wounded anti-government fighters.
Homs has become the most deadly city in Syria as the government of President Bashar Assad has sought to end a rebellion that began last year. A halt to the shelling in Homs, even for a brief period, would mark a break in the government's furious assault after weeks of bloodshed. At least 120 people have been killed in the past two days in Homs, according to activists, with many bodies remaining trapped under rubble.
Saleh Dabbakeh, the ICRC spokesman in Damascus, said he could not say whether the shelling of the area had ceased during the negotiations, but he said the fact that the talks were taking place indicated that it had.
"If we are there and trying to evacuate, I don't think there would be any kind of shelling," he said.
Dabbakeh said there was "trouble and unrest in other parts of the country," but he provided no locations. "It's localized, it's in certain provinces," he said.
Bouvier and Conroy, who entered the country illegally to cover the Syrian army's onslaught against the stronghold of the rebel Free Syrian Army, appeared in a video on Thursday asking to be allowed safe passage out of Baba Amr.
Dabbakeh said Friday's evacuations were not the first since the beginning of the most recent army campaign against Baba Amr. He said that the ICRC and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent since Feb. 11 have been able to get two convoys of evacuees out of Homs and three out of the area around the western town of Zabadani.
He also said that Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteers have been handing out humanitarian assistance and providing first aid to residents of Homs, Syria's third largest city, at nine distribution points.
"Assistance never really stopped," said Dabbakeh. "There were certain periods of time when it was difficult, sometimes very difficult."
Meanwhile, the ICRC was continuing to negotiate an agreement between the Assad regime and opposition representatives for a daily two-hour nationwide "humanitarian pause" in the fighting to allow for deliveries of food, medicines and other supplies to violence-hit towns and cities, he said.
Syrian activists said Friday that the journalists were waiting to be evacuated until there was a diplomatic presence involved.

MSNBC.COM - Investors, social media watchers and Facebook users may be looking forward to the social network's expected public stock offering later this year, but corporate governance experts aren't quite so enthusiastic.
Earlier this month, Facebook filed for a $5 billion IPO -- a deal that would be one of the biggest public stock offerings ever and values the social media juggernaut at about $100 billion.
Those sorts of numbers, coupled with the company's strong brand name, are likely to draw interest from individual investors eager to buy a piece of the company.?Governance experts caution, however,?that while buying a hot company like Facebook feels good now, potential investors should be wary of the stringent executive control structure outlined in the company's IPO registration document.
"Right now you have a situation at Facebook where there's a benevolent dictatorship, but my concern is they tend to become malevolent dictatorships, and that can hurt you when it comes to the pinch," said Aswath Damodaran, a professor of finance at New York University's Stern School of Business.
Damodaran notes that, based on information in the company's filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Facebook's founder and Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg would retain complete control of the company for the foreseeable future and would even have the right to appoint his own successor before he dies.

Velocity Micro Raptor Z90 (Intel Core i7-3930K)
If you're in the market for a gaming rig, chances are you're either going in with a budget in mind or looking for the best, most tricked-out system money can buy. The Velocity Micro Raptor Z90 (Intel Core i7-3930K) ($4,999 direct) fits the latter category and is not a gaming desktop for the miserly; it features Intel's latest Sandy Bridge-E series processor, which alone has a market price of $555, and two Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 graphics cards. In addition to its potent internal components, the Velocity Micro throws in such wireless features as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth?rare in custom gaming rigs.
Design and Features
The Raptor Z90 isn't small, but won't leave a Jolly Green Giant-sized footprint like the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Core i7-3960X) ($6,899 direct, 4.5 stars). It's a full silver aluminum tower with a little more heft than a standard tower PC.
Looking inside the chassis through the clear side panel, the interior is lit up by several blue LEDs. It's spacious and clean, with enough room to fit two extra optical drives; two hard drives (two SATA ports for SSD caching are open on the motherboard); perhaps another graphics card in the extra PCIe x16 slot (though between the two Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 graphics cards it's a tight squeeze); and four more DIMM slots for RAM.
The unit has two 120GB solid-state drives and a 2TB spinning 7,200-rpm hard drive, built for speed and storage space. The Polywell Ignition X7900i-3960 ($4,599 street, 4 stars) comes out ahead here, boasting two 120GB SSDs plus a 3TB spinning hard drive. There's a 1,200-watt power supply installed to help power all these components.
The Raptor Z90 comes with a total of 16GB of RAM, but once again the Polywell X7900i-3960 trumps it with a total of 32GB of RAM. The Raptor Z90 does, however, come equipped with more creature comforts, like 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (via a USB receiver), and a Blu-ray burner, whereas the Ignition X7900i-3960 has only a Blu-ray player.
There's no shortage of connectivity options. Behind a swinging aluminum door is a media-card reader supporting microSD, SD/MMC, xD, M2, CF/MD, and MS formats, as well as a solitary USB 2.0 port. The back has a USB BIOS Flashback port, six USB 2.0 ports (one occupied by the Bluetooth receiver), four USB 3.0 ports, two powered eSATA ports, a Gigabit Ethernet connection, two mini HDMI and four DVI-I video outputs, and S/PDIF and a multitude of audio jacks to hook up to a surround-sound system.
Performance
The Z90's 3.2GHz Intel Core i7-3930K processor chewed through any multi-core, CPU-intensive task we threw at it. It ran through our Photoshop CS5 script in 2 minutes 22 seconds, ahead of the Polywell X7900i-3960 (2:34) and a mere second slower than the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Core i7-3960X) (2:21). The Z90 led the pack in Cinebench R11.5, scoring 13.33 points to the Polywell X7900i-3960's 12.15 and Falcon Northwest's 12.85.
When it came down to the Raptor Z90's raw power on the gaming grid, it easily produced playable frame rates on Crysis (121.3 fps and 44.6 fps) and Lost Planet 2 (155.9 fps and 80.8 fps) on 1,024 by 768 Medium and 1,920 by 1,080 Very High/High quality settings, respectively. In Crysis at Medium settings, it easily bested the Polywell X7900i-3960 (95 fps) and Falcon Northwest Mach V (Core i7-3960X) (118 fps), but lost footing to the competition when resolution, anti-aliasing, and quality settings were turned up?the Polywell Ignition X7900i-3960 (73 fps) and Falcon Northwest Mach V (Core i7-3960X) (75 fps) bested it by a significant margin.
On Lost Planet 2, the Raptor Z90 fell significantly behind the Polywell on Medium and High settings (210 fps and 122 fps, respectively) and Falcon Northwest (250 fps and 168 fps, respectively). Granted, the two competitors come with superior GPU configurations: two GeForce GTX 590 cards for the Polywell Ignition X7900i-3960 and three GTX 580 cards for the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Core i7-3960X).
The Velocity Micro Raptor Z90 (Intel Core i7-3930K) comes bundled with a lot of nice features?a Blu-ray reader/writer, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth?and is a solid performer to boot. However, the honeymoon phase ends when comparing its raw gaming power to that of other systems. The Polywell Ignition X7900i-3960 comes with more memory and two Nvidia GeForce GTX 590 graphics cards, which helped garner higher frame rates over the Raptor Z90. But if you're looking for the best Sandy Bridge-E series gaming rig on the market, it's hard to beat the off-the-chart scores of the Editors' Choice Falcon Northwest Mach V (Core i7-3960X).

Some were fascinated by this; others feared that the pro teams would begin to operate like the Oregon Ducks and their ?snowflake? approach to helmet, jersey, and pants selection.
With the date for the handoff approaching, we recently dusted off those quotes in order to caution folks against buying any of the current Reebok jerseys until the new Nike designs arrive.? The league responded by saying that dramatic changes to logos and colors won?t occur.
On Wednesday, Nike CEO and president Mark Parker addressed the situation in an appearance on CNBC.
According to SportsBusiness Daily, Parker said, ?[People] are wondering, ?Well, what are you going to do?? Are you going to get crazy with the uniforms??? We?re actually going to have some fun, but respect the traditions of these teams at the same time.?
It?s unclear how much ?fun? Nike will be allowed to have.? Still, keep in mind what league spokesman Brian McCarthy told PFT last month:? ?Logos are controlled by teams and the NFL.? That will not change.? Teams have to apply to league to make changes to logos and colors.
Thus, while it may be something more than ?zero fun, sir,? Nike won?t have the ability to do whatever it wants, and teams that change their uniforms will still need the league office to sign off.
So far, we?ve seen a subtle revision to the Panthers logo, and teams like the Rams and Steelers have suggested that their alternate uniforms could change.? (Surely, new Rams coach Jeff Fisher has no interest in the blue and yellow duds that the team wore when beating Fisher?s Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV.)? The Seahawks apparently plan something more comprehensive.
We?ll all find out whether and to what extent every uniform changes at some point between now and the draft.? Until then, continue to think twice about buying any of the remaining Reebok jerseys.

The Simpsons are (eventually) coming!
The Simpsons are coming! EA announced today that it is hard at work on a new premium title its calling "The Simpsons: Tapped Out." It'll be available on iOS in the coming weeks, and on Android "a few months" after that (doh!), though EA says that it is working on beginning to release titles across multiple platforms simultaneously. The iOS version will be free to download and play, as will the Android version will likely be, though EA is hoping to make some scratch through in-app purchases that will help you conquer the game faster and more efficiently. EA is hoping the "freemium" model will attract both users who don't want a free game, and those who are willing to make a number of smaller, in-app purchases.
EA has made it clear that it's putting its collective heart and soul into the title, which will feature dialogue and gameplay with input from the show's writers and cast. "Tapped Out" revolves around Springfield rebuilding itself after Homer gets the town into some hot water.
While you're patiently waiting for the game to hit the Android Market, we promise to keep our eyes and ears peeled for any Simpsons-related news. Or just the Simpsons on TV.

Polish folk art society defends its 'Oskar' award

So the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is demanding that Poland's Association of Folk Artists stop giving out what it calls the "People's Oskar."
Waldemar Majcher of the Association of Folk Artists said Monday the dispute is the result a misunderstanding. But he also questioned Hollywood's demand.
Majcher said the "People's Oskar," was named after Oskar Kolberg, a 19th-century Polish ethnographer who wrote some 10,000 Polish folk songs. Still remembered and respected in Poland, Kolberg died in 1890.
In its 10-year history, the "People's Oskar" ? a metal plaque with an engraved image of Jesus ? has been awarded to individual artists, museums, folk festivals and even a bread fair.
Last week, Majcher said, he received a letter from Polish lawyers representing the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences protesting the use of the name "Oscar" in its Polish spelling "Oskar."
The letter from Wardynski and Partners ? which Majcher read to The Associated Press ? demands the Association of Folk Artists stop using that name and said the academy had obtained protection of the "Oscar" trademark in Poland in a law adopted in 2000.
The letter said the "verbal trademark Oscar ... is inseparably associated with the Academy Awards."
"The letter gave us a scare, but we are receiving plenty of encouragement from people," Majcher said, adding that in some ways members of his association are impressed that "such a big institution got interested in our modest project."
He said a team of lawyers is preparing a response defending the use of the name People's Oskar.

NYPD Monitored Muslim Students All Over Northeast
NEW YORK -- The New York Police Department monitored Muslim college students far more broadly than previously known, at schools far beyond the city limits, including the Ivy League colleges of Yale and the University of Pennsylvania, The Associated Press has learned.
Police talked with local authorities about professors 300 miles away in Buffalo and even sent an undercover agent on a whitewater rafting trip, where he recorded students' names and noted in police intelligence files how many times they prayed.
Detectives trawled Muslim student websites every day and, although professors and students had not been accused of any wrongdoing, their names were recorded in reports prepared for Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.
Asked about the monitoring, police spokesman Paul Browne provided a list of 12 people arrested or convicted on terrorism charges in the United States and abroad who had once been members of Muslim student associations, which the NYPD referred to as MSAs. Jesse Morton, who this month pleaded guilty to posting online threats against the creators of "South Park," had once tried to recruit followers at Stony Brook University on Long Island, Browne said.
"As a result, the NYPD deemed it prudent to get a better handle on what was occurring at MSAs," Browne said in an email. He said police monitored student websites and collected publicly available information, but did so only between 2006 and 2007.
"I see a violation of civil rights here," said Tanweer Haq, chaplain of the Muslim Student Association at Syracuse. "Nobody wants to be on the list of the FBI or the NYPD or whatever. Muslim students want to have their own lives, their own privacy and enjoy the same freedoms and opportunities that everybody else has."
In recent months, the AP has revealed secret programs the NYPD, built with help from the CIA, to monitor Muslims at the places where they eat, shop and worship. The AP also published details about how police placed undercover officers at Muslim student associations in colleges within the city limits; this revelation has outraged faculty and student groups.
Though the NYPD says it follows the same rules as the FBI, some of the NYPD's activities go beyond what the FBI is allowed to do.
Kelly and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg repeatedly have said that the police only follow legitimate leads about suspected criminal activity.
But the latest documents mention no wrongdoing by any students.
In one report, an undercover officer describes accompanying 18 Muslim students from the City College of New York on a whitewater rafting trip in upstate New York on April 21, 2008. The officer noted the names of attendees who were officers of the Muslim Student Association.
"In addition to the regularly scheduled events (Rafting), the group prayed at least four times a day, and much of the conversation was spent discussing Islam and was religious in nature," the report says.
Praying five times a day is one of the core traditions of Islam.
Jawad Rasul, one of the students on the trip, said he was stunned that his name was included in the police report.
"It forces me to look around wherever I am now," Rasul said.
But another student, Ali Ahmed, whom the NYPD said appeared to be in charge of the trip, said he understood the police department's concern.
"I can't blame them for doing their job," Ahmed said. "There's lots of Muslims doing some bad things and it gives a bad name to all of us, so they have to take their due diligence."
City College criticized the surveillance and said it was unaware the NYPD was watching students.
"The City College of New York does not accept or condone any investigation of any student organization based on the political or religious content of its ideas," the college said in a written statement. "Absent specific evidence linking a member of the City College community to criminal activity, we do not condone this kind of investigation."
Browne said undercover officers go wherever people they're investigating go. There is no indication that, in the nearly four years since the report, the NYPD brought charges connecting City College students to terrorism.
Student groups were of particular interest to the NYPD because they attract young Muslim men, a demographic that terrorist groups frequently draw from. Police worried about which Muslim scholars were influencing these students and feared that extracurricular activities such as paintball outings could be used as terrorist training.
The AP first reported in October that the NYPD had placed informants or undercover officers in the Muslim Student Associations at City College, Brooklyn College, Baruch College, Hunter College, City College of New York, Queens College, La Guardia Community College and St. John's University. All of those colleges are within the New York City limits.
A person familiar with the program, who like others insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it, said the NYPD also had a student informant at Syracuse.
Police also were interested in the Muslim student group at Rutgers, in New Brunswick, N.J. In 2009, undercover NYPD officers had a safe house in an apartment not far from campus. The operation was blown when the building superintendent stumbled upon the safe house and, thinking it was some sort of a terrorist cell, called 911.
The FBI responded and determined that monitoring Rutgers students was one of the operation's objectives, current and former federal officials said.
The Rutgers police chief at the time, Rhonda Harris, would not discuss the fallout. In a written statement, university spokesman E.J. Miranda said: "The university was not aware of this at the time and we have nothing to add on this matter."
Another NYPD intelligence report from Jan. 2, 2009, described a trip by three NYPD officers to Buffalo, where they met with a high-ranking member of the Erie County Sheriff's Department and agreed "to develop assets jointly in the Buffalo area, to act as listening posts within the ethnic Somalian community."
The sheriff's department official noted "that there are some Somali Professors and students at SUNY-Buffalo and it would be worthwhile to further analyze that population," the report says.
Browne said the NYPD did not follow that recommendation. A spokesman for the university, John DellaContrada, said the NYPD never contacted the administration. Sheriff's Departments spokeswoman Mary Murray could not immediately confirm the meeting or say whether the proposal went any further.
Another report, entitled "Weekly MSA Report" and dated Nov. 22, 2006, explained that officers from the NYPD's Cyber Intelligence unit visited the websites, blogs and forums of Muslim student associations as a "daily routine."
The universities included Yale; Columbia; the University of Pennsylvania; Syracuse; New York University; Clarkson University; the Newark and New Brunswick campuses of Rutgers; and the State University of New York campuses in Buffalo, Albany, Stony Brook and Potsdam, N.Y.; Queens College, Baruch College, Brooklyn College and La Guardia Community College.
"Students who advertised events or sent emails about regular events should not be worried about a `terrorism file' being kept on them. NYPD only investigated persons who we had reasonable suspicion to believe might be involved in unlawful activities," Browne said.
But such assurances seem to offer little comfort to some former students.
One University at Buffalo student, Adeela Khan, did end up in a police report after receiving an email on Nov. 9, 2006, announcing an upcoming Islamic conference in Toronto. The email said "highly respected scholars" would be attending, but did not say who or give any details of the program. Khan says she clicked "forward," sent it to a Yahoo chat group of fellow Muslims and promptly forgot about it.
"A couple people had gone the year prior and they said they had a really nice time, so I was just passing the information on forward. That's really all it was," said Khan, who has since graduated.
Khan was a board member of the Muslim Student Association at the University at Buffalo at the time. She says she never went to the conference, was not affiliated with it and had no idea who was speaking at it.
But officer Mahmood Ahmad of the NYPD's Cyber Intelligence Unit took notice and listed Khan in his weekly report for Kelly. The officer began researching the Toronto conference and found that one of the speakers, Tariq Ramadan, had his U.S. visa revoked in 2004. The U.S. government said it was because Ramadan had given money to a Palestinian group. It reinstated his visa in 2010.
The officer's report notes three other speakers. One, Siraj Wahaj, is a prominent but controversial New York imam who has attracted the attention of authorities for years. Prosecutors included his name on a 3 1/2-page list of people they said "may be alleged as co-conspirators" in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, though he was never charged.
The other two are Hamza Yusuf and Zaid Shakir, two of the nation's most prominent Muslim scholars. Both have lectured at top universities in the U.S.. Yusuf met with President George W. Bush at the White House following the 2001 terrorist attacks.
The post about the academic event was enough to get Khan's name mentioned in the weekly MSA report, which was stamped "SECRET" in red letters and sent to Kelly's office.
There is no indication that the investigation went any further, or that Khan was ever implicated in anything. But she worries about being associated with the police report.
"It's just a waste of resources, if you ask me," she said. "I understand why they're doing it, but it's just kind of like a Catch-22. I'm not the one doing anything wrong."
The university said it was unaware its students were being monitored.
"UB does not conduct this kind of surveillance and if asked, UB would not voluntarily cooperate with such a request," the university said in a written statement. "As a public university, UB strongly supports the values of freedom of speech and assembly, freedom of religion, and a reasonable expectation of privacy."
The same Nov. 22, 2006, report also noted seminars announced on the websites of the Muslim student associations at New York University and Rutgers University's campus in Newark, N.J.
Browne, the police department spokesman, said intelligence analysts were interested in recruiting by the Islamic Thinkers Society, a New York-based group that wants to see the United States governed under Islamic law. Morton was a leader of the group and went to Stony Brook University's MSA to recruit students that same month.
"One thing that our open source searches were interested in determining at the time was, where do Islamic Thinkers Society go - in terms of MSAs for recruiting," Browne said.
Yale declined comment. The University of Pennsylvania did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Other colleges on the list said they worried the monitoring infringed on students' freedom of speech.
"Like New York City itself, American universities are admired across the globe as places that welcome a diversity of people and viewpoints. So we would obviously be concerned about anything that could chill our essential values of academic freedom or intrude on student privacy," Columbia University spokesman Robert Hornsby said in a written statement.
Danish Munir, an alumnus adviser for the University of Pennsylvania's Muslim Student Association, said he believes police are wasting their time by watching college students.
"What do they expect to find here?" Munir said. "These are all kids coming from rich families or good families, and they're just trying to make a living, have a good career, have a good college experience. It's a futile allocation of resources."
