QR Codes Raise Funds for Breast Cancer Research | Business 2 ...

Susan G. Komen QR code in Marie Claire

The nonprofit Susan G. Komen organization is using QR codes through March to help raise funds for breast cancer research. The QR codes are part of their marketing campaign called ?Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink for the Cure? campaign.

The QR codes can currently be found in print ads in Marie Claire magazine. Mobile Commerce Daily quoted Brian Penrod, manager of interactive media at Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Dallas, as saying, ?We want to be where the consumers are and provide easy access to breast health and breast cancer information. As a nonprofit, all actions whether on web or mobile, should always provide an option to donate.?

When consumers scan the QR codes, they?ll be taken to the Susan G. Komen mobile site where they can watch a video that details the Passionately Pink campaign. Consumers will be able to easily donate from their smartphones, sign up to get more information about fundraising opportunities, and access links to social media accounts for the organization.

Says Penrod, ?Along with driving people to komen.org, we wanted to provide users on the go the ability to easily access the campaign [information]. The mobile site plays a large role and will become more important the more we have mobile campaigns through future applications and text message campaigns.?

Having a user-friendly mobile site is an essential part of a 360 degree marketing campaign for the Susan G. Komen organization. I can?t help but wonder why they didn?t use a custom (hello, pink!) QR code for their Passionately Pink for the Cure campaign, although. I definitely think that would have made the QR code stand out more, plus using the color pink or incorporating the pink ribbon into the QR code would have blended seamlessly into their campaign.

Bryan Laurienti, lead graphic designer at BBB Systems, agreed, ?Custom QR codes are more eye-catching and intriguing (as well as trustworthy) when they contain a company?s logo, colors, or a design rather than falling back on the standard black and white QR code.?
